Chapter 5
“You don’t have to shoot down El just because you didn’t get your way! It’s not her fault that you’re not talented enough! She is amazing and that gives you no right to walk all over her!” Johnathan yells, running over to comfort me. “Stacy! Is it true you’ve been bullying Eleanor?” Mrs Grace asks in a stern tone. “What! I only said that she shouldn’t had gotten the role! I mean look at her!” Stacy says innocently. This makes me start to tremble, making Johnathan hug me even tighter. “That is unacceptable and isn’t tolerated in this theatre! You are hereby suspended from Newsies until further notice! I will see you in detention young lady!” Mrs Grace tells Stacy, making her run out of the auditorium crying. “Katy, it’s your lucky day! You are now El’s understudy!” She says with a smile. Katy and I start squealing as she jumps up and down, Johnathan and Jeremy joining in.
“We should all celebrate! Maybe we can all go on a double date.” Johnathan says with a wink as we head out to his car. “I mean if Katy is okay with it.” Jeremy says sheepishly. “Sounds great.” Katy says as she twirls her hair. “Okay. Well then it’s a date!” Johnathan says, pumping his fist in the air. “So we will pick you two up at El’s at around 6!”
I hear the door bell ring and Katy sprint downstairs, nearly tripping on her skirt as she stops abruptly. “Is somebody nervous?” I joke as I catch up with her. “No, it’s just Nick got to the door before me.” She replies grimly, walking towards the door. “So what are your intentions with my sister and her best friend?” Nick says in a pressed voice. “W-we were just going out to celebrate Katy getting the understudy.” Jeremy replies nervously. “Nick! Leave El and Katy’s dates alone!” My mom yells from the kitchen. “Okay!” He yells back. “I’m keeping my eye on you two.” Nick tells the boys, walking away.
“Sorry about that! My brother can be a little protective at times.” I tell them with a laugh. “Shall we?” Johnathan asks, handing me a mixed bouquet, Jeremy doing the same with Katy. We head to the city and I ask, “Where are we going this time?” “Not telling! It’s a surprise.” Johnathan replies with a wink. “If it’s anything like your date with El I’m in.” Katy jokes in the backseat. We enter into a parking lot of a diner. “What’s this place?” I ask Johnathan as I get out of the car. “I saw this place and it reminded me of grease.” He replies, opening the door for everyone. We sit down and eat dinner, making jokes about previous shows, and fighting over what’s the best musical.
“It was a pleasure taking you guys out to dinner.” Johnathan says as he drops us off. “Ditto, See you tomorrow!” I reply, hugging him before heading inside with Katy. We go upstairs and chat and that’s when I get a text from an unknown number, “This isn’t over.”
