I usually just find a pattern and pray I have the right yarn lol!!
Pattern first!
I mostly get the yarn first
I obviously love yarn
Maybe that is why I have so much unused yarn that I have no purpose for…
It’s about 50/50
sometimes I buy the yarn first and it sits around until I see a pattern that “calls its name “
Sometimes I buy the pattern first and it sits around until I find the yarn that “calls its name “
Probably find what I want to make first and cross my fingers that I have the yarn for it lol. Worst case scenario, I’ve gotta buy more yarn..and is that really a bad scenario?
Mix of both. If I find a pattern I like then I will buy yarn for it but sometimes I find a really cute yarn and then find a pattern for it
i definitely find the pattern first, and then i go yarn hunting! this helps me minimize on buying more yarn lol :)
I’m a get yarn first create/find pattern second kind of gal. The yarn gives me inspiration but sometimes I get the yarn first but only when i have a sip or when i have an order/want to update my shop
Guys yarn all day cuz im a yarnoholic
I used to just buy yarn and not have a plan. That leads to over buying yarn and it doesn’t just use a lot of money. It puts a lot of stress on the buyer because they’ll slowly be consumed by over consuming yarn itself. that’s led me to pick a pattern or at least have a vague group of something I want to make. Whether it’s a specific hermit crab pattern or just a sea animal.
mix of both, but usually patterns come first
Both! I will sometimes save up to find the perfect bundle for a pattern I want to make, then sometimes Im just like OOH! pretty green! and buy it for no particular reason other than
pwetttyyyyyyy ![]()
Pattern first, yarn second ![]()

pattern first bc i never know what i want 2 make…
I usually find a pattern first. I scroll through ribblr, then i see a pattern, and beg my parents to take me to Michaels if i don’t have the right yarn to crochet it ![]()
I actually am guilty of picking yarn 1st then a pattern. Sometimes I walk into Michael’s and I’ll see a beautiful new yarn and images of projects instantly pop into my head.
Pattern first, usually, so I get the right yarn. But I have a huge stash of yarn, and sometimes I try to find a pattern that will go with my stash so hubby cannot complain that I do not need more yarn. He just doesn’t understand some yarn is for adoring and looking at you just to make you happy. Other yarn is for something, one day because the yarn was too expensive not to make something special and you grabbed several skeins because it was on a huge sale. Then there are the surprise bags which you get as you are stuck in a rut and want something different to play with, on top of yarn you bought fora pattern but never started it or misplaced the pattern, etc, so new yarn is zz always Needed and sometimes I go to the store for one thing, walk past the yarn section, not even looking, okay barely looking and those skeins and cakes just jump in my basket while I wasn’t looking. Alright, alright, sometimes I walk past all the yarn slowly a few times just to see what is there and the rest of them jump in my cart. Honest.
So really it is both, I guess. ![]()
I even had a couple cones of yarn threaten to cut other pretty yarns if I didn’t take them home! I was scared they would do it and that variegated red, orange and yellow looked like he meant it and was sitting night next to some plushy baby yarn, how could I not do what it said, it was a baby yarn, it had done nothing wrong and I couldn’t let it get cut!! Yeah, Hubby didn’t believe me either…but he wasn’t there, man, he wasn’t there.
Okay now I need to yarn shop to help calm myself down and get those skeins look out of my mind. You guys will back me up, right? If my hubby comes asking, it was for therapy to get rid of those crochet yarns flashbacks, that poor baby yarn. ![]()

I usually go look at yarn when I’m bored and I buy a good amount that I think is pretty THEN awhile later when I’m bored I go and look at patterns and match what yarn I think would look good with it ![]()
I definitely plan my project first before buying the yarn!
