Hey all!
I’m pretty much a beginner at crochet and I’m having trouble distinguishing why people prefer different yarns over others - specifically acrylic vs. cotton. I’ve been using a lot of cotton yarn because it’s much better for the environment as acrylic is just plastic, and I find it MUCH easier to work with; all the acrylic I’ve worked with is slippery, splits easily, and gives me yarn burn if I work with it for a while (doesn’t happen with cotton, but I am looking into tension rings).
However, I recently was watching a tutorial video where someone said that acrylic is better for beginners because it’s easier to work with than cotton, and I’m just wondering if anyone else has had that experience because I was so baffled by it
or if you have any opinions/advice regarding your favorite (or least favorite!) yarn materials.
Thanks!!

I think the yarn material just depends on your preference and what you’re making. Certain types of materials are softer, and those kinds are better for blankets, plushies, stuff like that. Cotton I’d say is good for lots of different things, including clothing. It also won’t be as warm as wool if you use it for clothing (I think). Acrylic is preferred by lots because it’s cheaper and still works well. It also depends on the brand you use. Some brands of acrylic aren’t as good quality as others.
It really just comes down to your preferences though <3

Most of the time I use acrylic cause it’s cheap but honestly I don’t find to much of a difference with yarn types I can do whatever kinda depends on the project

Well, that subject is a rabbit hole in itself. Much you can learn on the internet.
I learned to crochet on what’s called tape yarn, back when I was I had money.
In the beginning I couldn’t work with caron, Impeccable,Vanna White and Peaches and Cream and some Red Heart because it split so much. I have tight tension and use an in-line hook so that makes sense.
Crochet is an art, so it’s whatever works for you, and this is discovered by trial and error.

My favourite is cotton because I find it easy to work with and it’s better for the environment than acrylic. Maybe that person had issues with it because they were using a hook size which was too small (it can be a bit stiffer than acrylic to work with if the hook is undersized). People often recommend acrylic to beginners because it’s cheap and commonly available, but I’ve found cotton to be much nicer to work with.
