Tips for Spotting and Reporting Ai Patterns? (Win a Gem!) (Winner Announced)

Thank you everyone for the great tips! The gem winner for this topic is: @Sashacrochets :confetti_ball:

You may already know our stance but we will repeat it; we do not allow Ai patterns to be on Ribblr! :cross_mark:

Our team takes a close look at patterns coming through and they can be taken down when users like you report on them.

So to help others, what are some tips you have to spot an Ai pattern? What are some red flags people should watch out for?

For your help and effort, a random commentor will win a gem! :gem_stone:

if you look at the stitches, see if they look like something you’d make. for example this bird looks like it was made using the wrong side of the amigurumi:

also the purple parts, that look like they’d be made with a dc, are smaller than the white sc

(also there is no MR for the beak part)

Think about if you can make that shape with crochet, and if not, it’s probably AI!

Ribbot, is this an April Fools day prank

Anyways, some tips I have to spot AI pictures/patterns are:

  • Does the image look too perfect? If it does, then chances are, it is AI
  • If there are hands in the picture, then look closely at them, AI has A LOT of trouble drawing hands
  • Depending on the AI, the pictures will look grainy and pixelated.
  • The lighting might look… off? I don’t really know how to explain this, but usually, the lighting is WAY too good.
  • AI patterns are harder to spot, but check if it makes sense: Crochet a oval :exclamation_question_mark:
  • There might also be formatting errors: 6scinmr(6) ← WHAT IS THIS :sob::sob::sob:
  • The price… AI patterns are usually cheap $1 and they are in bundles of 100 :sob::sob::sob:. As a pattern designer, how do you even make 100 (DOGS) and price it at $1?!?!?!
  • AI BABIES… uncanny valley…
  • The stitches look… weird. I have seen rectangular stitches, hexagonal stitches, KINT stiches :sob::sob::sob::sob::sob:

Please ask the designer for more pictures if you are unsure of them being AI :pink_heart:

This is only meant as a guide for spotting it :pink_heart:

PLEASE STOP HARRASING PEOPLE THAT HAVE PERFECT STITCHES AND TENSION!!! :pink_heart:

Just because it looks AMAZING, doesn’t mean it’s ai :sob:

I put my 100% human made picture of a plushie into an AI detector, and it was 89% AI, but I MADE IT :sob:

the stitches will look wrong and weird (like rlly weird), not natural and it will have a very unreal photo, as if it’s too perfect. Sometimes the lighting will look too good, or too bad, sometimes they also have writing errors. The background of the image will look fake too.

Irregular stitches and lighting are big signs for AI pictures.

stitches will look strange and won’t make sense, backgrounds are blurry and unnaturally perfect, the lighting looks off, sometimes objects will be fused together (example : hair appears connected to shoulder), and the hands always look weird

If there’s more then one image that shows all the sides of the project then it’s most likely not Ai.

  • If something looks too perfect, or there’s a weird shine like in the picture below, there is always a nauseating shine/lighting :face_vomiting:

  • If the image has random things people don’t usually add, like in the image above the dog has a collar. Not many people would actually buy a metal charm to add a collar for it.

  • If there are stitches that do not look realistic (like WHAT are those ā€˜stitches’ in the ears and snout?!?!)

  • If the background is blurry (it’s literally in both of these images!)

  • If the colors randomly change, unrealistically.

  • And finally if there are REAL things. Like, why does this cow have realistic eyes and those horns?!

hope this helps!

Stitches can be unaligned, too perfect, too much of a detailed impossible stitch, backround to clean, lightings, pay attention to objects nearby, they can look odd.

If the project has parts on it that aren’t crocheted, specifically on amigurumi, then it’s ai. For example if a cats ears are like real cat ears and not stitches then it’s most likely ai lol

Here’s a helpful video I just found. I feel like I’m getting better at spotting Ai becuse of how much crochet AI Iā€ve been seeing.

Here’s the Video, hope this helps!

If there are weird crochet stitches you’ve never seen in other crochet, it might be ai.

If the shadow created by the plush is weirdly placed

If the lighting looks wrong

If it’s too perfect

If you don’t know how that could be made in crochet at all, it might be actual crochet but if it’s not possible, it’s probably ai

If the pictures differ from one another like a stitch that looks different in a picture and in another

Huge difference in yarn size/hook size in amigurumi could be a sign of ai

Of course, if there’s comments that a pattern is Ai then that’s a sign

Finally, if the background is clearly ai that is a sign that the pattern might also be ( but it could also be a genuine pattern!)

if the lighting is something that cannot be recreated then it’s AI..

  • If there are crochet hooks in the image, do they actually look like hooks?
  • Also check the other patterns posted by the seller. If any are clearly AI, the real-looking ones may be stolen images.
  • Bundles of unreasonable quantities of patterns (probably 30 or more)
  • If there are animals, do they actually look like animals?
  • Do they look like actual animals (e.g. fur, feathers) instead of yarn?

Example:

  • 800+? really?
  • half elephant on the left
  • blob thing front and center
  • Crochet hoook? in the front
  • Knitting needles on the left? Sticking out of a skein?
  • There’s a yellow bear to the left of the sign bear’s head, around eye level, that has what looks like a chef’s hat for an arm
  • 2nd row on the far right, bear’s face is half missing
  • Glowy effect
  • soft lighting from the side
  • eyes sparkling
  • Gemini logo bottom right

Because the majority of my projects come from here, I fortunately havent come across a AI pattern.

Though what I look for with regards to AI is the image. Does it look flawless? Is it too polished?

I found this one on Ribblr a long time ago but I think they deleted the pattern and their shop

  1. Only look at the crocheted item. Ignore the background because a lot of people replace the backgrounds in their photos using stock photos in photo apps.

  2. If there are stitches going in multiple directions on the same body part without sewing, it is most likely AI.

  3. Just because you haven’t seen a stitch like it before, doesn’t automatically make it AI. Try doing a reverse image search to see if the photo has been posted before or if an item with a similar stitch comes up.

Here are my tips!!

  1. look where the safety eyes are, you CANNOT put those in rows, only in-between!
  2. stuff in the background! sometimes scissors or needles are all messed up and some background are just clearly ai generated!
  3. stitches being unnatural
That’s all I can think of rn llol
