trying to knit as an absolute beginner!

Hello! Yesterday, I got inspired by someone I knew who leanred to knit recently and made a sweater. So today, I decided to try to knit! I just leanred how to make a longtail cast on, and I’m very happy !
My ultimate goal is to make a sweater. So if you know how to knit, feel free to share some tips you have for absolute beginners, or maybe share some patterns or youtube channels you reccomend. :yarn:
Have you started to learn to knit recently, or are you a knitting pro? Let me know!

Ooo congrats on deciding to knit! I was always scared to knit for some reason. I would recommend regular knitting needles to work with since you are just a beginner. Learn one stitch at a time and try to get used to it. Also, use continental knitting. Continental knitting uses similar techniques that you would use for crocheting :3.

Ooo thanks! I tried to knit with curcular needles but its so hard!! I’ll have to scavenge around the house to see if I have regular needles anywhere lol

Learning on regular needles is easier, I’m not a pro yet and circular needles are trickier, lol. My first needles were a cheap bamboo straight needle set from Amazon. The bamboo makes the yarn slide less and as a beginner that helps a lot, but after you get going, metal needles are better because it slides easier so you can go faster. I am mainly a crocheter and I tried continental style because it is definitely faster, but I never could quite get it and it slowed me down in learning and was discouraging, but like 99% of everyone else gets Continental style, lol. I did eventually switch to English style knitting and then bam, I was off to the races, lol. So do start with Continental, but if it just doesnt work for you, dont get discouraged, try English then :sparkling_heart:

I’ve knit for several years now (I’ve crocheted far longer) and I would agree that starting out with straight needles is probably easier. I don’t know what style I knit in, but it is probably continental

I use both wooden and metal needles equally

This is a great knitting needle set for beginners!

I would also recommend getting a ton of stitch markers because you can lose the small ones easily! :3

That’s great, what a fun adventure! I’ve been knitting & crocheting for over 35 years.
I always recommend beginners check out a how to knit book from the library. Videos are great but sometimes a well done illustration makes it more clear.
If you make a sweater that requires sewing, practice your sewing on your gauge swatches so you finished sweater will be neat. Setting sleeves is the trickiest part, tho not as much of an issue these days since many patterns don’t have inset sleeves.
Happy stitching!

I LOVE continental style! Seems much more ergonomic to me. Plus I crochet too and the motions are similar.
