uncurling doll hair - advice needed

hello everyone. as some of you know, someone out of state has commissioned me for several dolls and a couple other projects. I’m working on the first doll now, and need advice for the hair. the hair is supposed to be straight, but do to my tension, the pieces curl up. I’m using acrylic for this doll, should i steam it? could i steam it over a pot of boiling water? currently, it sits like a spider on the doll’s head, so any advice would be appreciated. thank you

You can try steaming it, but it might just curl back on itsself. Perhaps consider steaming and blocking it too?

wonder if you size up a couple sizes on your hook for the chain part, then size back down for the way back up. Then steam. Maybe both would get it straight?

i would try but it’s nearly done and frankly making hair is the bane of my existence

i could try putting it on my blocking board i suppose

Totally understandable. I know some people have also used a hot iron to kill acrylic. It does change the feel of it though. but I believe it also looses most of its shape so it would likely lay flat after that. I’ve seen people use it a lot on tassles

interesting, maybe I’ll give it a try. im half considering soaking it in water and chucking it in the dryer honestly

Do you have a handheld clothes steamer, by any chance?

no, but i do have an iron with a steam setting

Tha might work, then. You can use a steamer to “kill” the acrylic yarn, which makes it looser and limper.

Here, this article should help a lot.

You may be able to steam the project then pin it into place to dry?

I’ll look into this, thanks

Maybe you could get the hair wet then pin it onto the dolls back then let it air dry or use a blow dryer and maybe that could help it lay flat? Also I just used really bad grammar for that so I apologize:sob:

Try boiling some water then put clips or something to weigh down the hair on the strands, put only the hair in the water then leave it upside down to dry with it weighed down

interesting, I’ll consider it

I think this is your best bet without damaging the texture. I know it can be a pain in the butt though.
