Video game patterns idea

Hello everyone!

I was watching a Terraria stream while crocheting my sweater, and I got to thinking: What if I crocheted things from the game? Now I know things from shows and movies have been crocheted before, and I know you have to name them something else because copyright is a thing, but I was curious about what you all had to say about this idea! Now, I probably won’t do just Terraria, I’ll be doing a lot of different games because I have many interests, but If you are interested, I would be happy to take suggestions!

Thank you,
Zod/Jay

So you don’t get in trouble, you can create a pattern using ideas/characters from a game but you cannot sell it without permission from the copyright owner. Changing the name does not protect you from being sued. Everyone who does this is at risk of legal action. I will say that some production studios allow you to create and sell fan art and it will say on their website.

I believe terraria does ill check! Edit, they do as long as you don’t put their logo on it! Edit 2, and no mass production

Hmm well just in case, I could create fanart and show that but not sell the pattern or the makes. Thank you for telling me I don’t want legal issues. Also, not arguing, but I’ve seen people do things from popular franchises like marvel and DC. Fanart is a gray area and terraria is very open to fanart. Also in the U.S. at least, copyright isn’t enforced criminally (as far as my research goes). And if the pattern is free, would that be okay because I’m not technically selling anything because I’m not profiting. Sorry if this sounds rude or argumentative, it’s not meant to!

Not rude at all! Now I’m not a lawyer but this is what I have been told by people who have spoken with one regarding this issue.

Personally, I stay away from anything that isn’t my own design or in the public domain to be safe. I have been told that even free is a gray area but companies are most likely not going to spend money to sue over a free pattern. They may send a c&d order though. People who are selling patterns of marvel, dc, disney, etc are either breaking copyright law or have gone through the, usually, long and expensive process of getting licensing rights to a character or have made a deal with the owner. I only have met 1 person who has gone through that process and has been approved. They said it took over a year.

Yea I don’t feel like going through that whole process. I’ll think about doing my idea, but copyright scares me. Thank you!
