If you want the skein to stay like a skein then no. It really doesn’t matter if you wind it into a ball or not. It’s up to you. Winding yarn into a ball is not a requirement tho it rolls around on the floor sometimes

You’re welcome. I recommend winding yarn into cakes. You can use a yarn winder or wind it by hand.

Here’s the tutorial I used:

I also have a nice cake winder. But when I do turn them into balls, I put them in a plastic pitcher or oatmeal container to hold it in place. That way they don’t roll around all over the floor. My tip of the day!

I usually do when they get small

Or you can put a snack bag clip on the edge of a big bowl and put the yarn in the bowl and then put the end through the metal part of the clip:>

I just found this at a rummage last week. I have had another just like it for years and I love it.

Ur not supposed to but when it comes to organizing your yarn winding it to a yarn cake takes up less space and ur able to stack them

Just don’t wind it too tightly. But yeah, I wouldn’t until needed. I usually do mine when the skein is used and falling apart or making a mess.

I know it used to be a more common practice to wind a skein of yarn into a ball before using, the reason for it that I was told is that it helps reduce yarn barf, saving time later on from having to untangle the yarn barf while working on a project

You have to wind them if you are using yarn that does not come in a skein, like the fancy, lovely wool and cotton that are hand dyed. Otherwise I use them from the skein until they start causing problems, then there is less to wind.

I don’t typically do that unless I can’t find the center pull.

Winding yarn can stretch it a bit, so it’s generally recommended that you keep it as purchased until you’re ready to use it.
