I think it depends too. There’s a foundation chain that’s just the set of chains to start. But you can have a foundation sc/dc/etc chain as well where you are working your chain and your first row of stitches at the same time. They’re super useful if you have tension issues with a standard chain but they’re difficult to explain. There’s videos that help but even then I have to refer back to them sometimes cause I don’t use it often
