I’m going to ask Ribblr to start a left-handed personal space subcategory for all things related to left-handedness, but one of the questions to open a space is what should I name it.
I’m awful at making things, but some of you guys are great at it.
I want it to be a space not just for left-handed crocheters, but for anyone wanting to discuss left-handed issues, questions, or suggestions. Like a right-handed designer that wants to make their patterns more accessible to Lefty’s but doesn’t know how, or if they are trying to teach their left-handed friends how to crochet. I’d love for it to be helpful for makers and designers alike.
There are also those (@aeryneso and friends) who are training themselves to crochet in their non-dominant hand, so run into the same kinds of questions.
I have been learning that lefty uniqueness affects more than I originally thought, and there are more lefty crocheters than I thought too.
Some of my lame attempts:
Lefty World
Left-handed Forum
Left is Right Too
Please comment your thoughts. I’d make a poll, but I want to wait for some better suggestions first.
Well, if my awesome friends hadn’t tagged me, I probably wouldn’t have seen @QueenMedusa 's lefty question. With a specific space, all the lefty stuff can be in one spot. I’d totally tag the crocheters too, but threads can get easily lost in a more general space, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to search and dig to find that one thread that talked about dual patterns I made a while ago for people who asked for it. It won’t be a private space. It’ll be a public one where anyone can comment and share their tips and tricks and questions.
I hear your point, but here is why id like a public lefty space. If my awesome friends hadn’t tagged me, I probably wouldn’t have seen @QueenMedusa 's lefty question. tysm for the tag!! i think this is a great idea <33 maybe you could tag some of your lefty friends?? (i don’t know any except @LexaLovelyCrafts mb ) and no, i don’t have any name ideas either lol
It is tough to crochet with your non-dominant hand. I’ve had to teach myself enough so I could show my son how to crochet. Starting with something simple helps.
Like learning to crochet the first time, starting a piece is the hardest part.
So, as an option, if you start with a chain foundation and the first row using your dominant hand, you can ch1 and return without turning and practice your off hand. This skips the difficult beginning. The previous stitches will give you a guide on how smooth or not you are, and if you need to tighten or loosen your stitches.
I definitely like this idea; however, the posts I see about left handed crocheting is a bit rare. I feel as though there wouldn’t be much activity on it, and a lot of people would most likely just post in the “crochet” section since it is the “general” section.
I would definitely join in if you decide to create this space though!
Well, left handed designers can also share when they have a pattern with a left-handed option up for testing or released. It’s kinda nice to be catered to.
It’ll be helpful for new lefty crocheters that aren’t as used to flipping demo pics or videos in their head.
I plan on using it as a resource more than anything else. I don’t think every space needs to be super active, and a group thread would close after 7 days of not posting, so having a space sidesteps that problem.
Oh! And I forgot- as a Regular, I can add a tag to any lefty thread that ends up in the general chat for the lefty space. Or any of the other awesome regulars could add it once they see it too. This would help whoever made the comment get the attention of whoever joins the space.
Ok. Looks like there is an early lead, and I am going to be busy for the next while, so I’m going to go ahead and close the poll and send in my space request to Ribblr.
