what yarn do i use? (im new plz help!)

hey, so i live in australia and am having a hard time knowing what yarn to use for what project. i will follow a pattern with the yarn i have (100% acrylic (is this wrong???)) and then it looks nothing like the pattern even though i know i followed it correctly.

is there places i can find yarn in store or should i just order online? if so, where do i get it???
please let me know what type of yarn is best for each type of project. if you reply to this you’re amazing !!! xoxoxo

Hi, I’m also from Australia. What yarn you need is generally determined by the gauge listed in the pattern. If there isn’t a gauge, you can estimate what yarn thickness would be appropriate based on the hook size required. The type of yarn you use will also affect the appearance. If the pattern originally used a chenille yarn and you use a 100% acrylic, then the end result will look much less fluffy.

I usually buy yarn from Spotlight, generally the Flinders Cotton 8ply (because I try to avoid synthetic yarns due to microplastics). Lincraft is another option in Australia as well.

What yarn is best depends on the project you’re making. For amigurumi, I like to use DK 100% cotton with a 3.0mm hook. For clothes, natural fibres (e.g. bamboo, cotton, merino wool) are preferable because they’ll be frequently washed.

If you use a different size yarn on the pattern, it will look a little bit different
