Sometimes when i go to my DMs i find that the messages have disappeared 
why does this happen? Is there a way to get them back?

Im pretty sure they automatically delete after 7 days, i could be wrong though

Not that I know off, when i want to keep a conversation I sometimes screenshot the messages I know thats not ideal though

I think it’s because there might be a max amount of how many dms can be shown? Or the 7 day delete history?
The dm will be shown again if someone says something in that dm, or if you press the “chat” button on someone’s profile and start dming them

They delete them so the app doesn’t glitch out with all the data
