hello everyone! to put it simply, i have entirely too much yarn. back when i used to sell items, i would need to get a specific color for an order, and then another, until it got to the point where i have dozens of colors that i won’t use. my small tool cart is absolutely overflowing with small cakes that are hardly enough to make anything meaningful with (to me anyway, I’m more drawn towards large projects like blankets and sweaters). I’m aware of scrap yarn projects, but i personally don’t care for the way they look. at this point, I’m highly considering donating all of it and starting over with only getting yarn for specific projects. has anyone else done this before? was it relieving or more stressful? do let me know if you have. have a lovely day ![]()
Nope, I just keep collecting more. What if you did granny square blankets? The different colors would work then?
that could work, I’m just not very good at putting different colors together. then i could donate the blanket
I want to make oversized sweaters with them.
You could do scrap hats and donate those as well. I’m sure there’s a need for those at shelters and stuff for the winter
with the yarn or the squares?
if only i could make a functional hat, i would. every hat I’ve made has turned out wrong. i do plan to donate whatever i make/decide to give up though
the squares. I need a lot for next Christmas.
ah makes sense
If it helps, this is how I did beanies recently. Using the chart below for size, make a magic ring with dc stitches, starting with 10 in the ring. Increase by 10 stitches each round until the circle is the crown diameter in the below chart (from edge to edge through the middle). Once your crown is that size, then you just do repeat dc rounds until it’s long enough. I typically go with the below the ear length. Hasn’t failed me yet. If you do adult medium, should fit most people!
oh wow, thanks!
Maybe you could try giving out the yarn you don’t want or need during markets to other crochet or knit vendors
I don’t get rid of yarn I use the yarn to make whatever I can. I’m using 2026 to destash challenge
sadly i don’t know any vendors in my area. i know they exist, but not their names or how to contact them
I’ve tried those before, but i just can’t make enough projects to really destash
You could do premie baby hats with the small cakes and donate them to a local hospital.
u could make tapestries??
You could donate the yarn to a local school, senior center, or even some libraries.
Color wheels are very helpful in pairing colors together.
Ear warmers are functional like hats, and much easier to make since it’s just a rectangle. If you’re worried about thickness, I’ve seen some double layered ones which would be especially good for eating up yarn. I’m sure there’s patterns, but it’s essentially a flattened tube sewn so it can go around someone’s head.
If you want to try hats, what I do is chain from the crown of my head (where the hat’s top would sit) to where I want the edge (around the tops of my ears/forehead) and add extra chain for the folded part, then just go back and forth until it fits around your head, slst to the foundation ch, and cinch the top shut. Hats in rounds are usually tricky for me, but I’ve always found this involves less estimation if you’re interested in trying hats.
You could also try mittens, I’ve never made any but they seem like a good fit for your situation.
Socks might be fun to make, and could work with a variety of colors in stripes or another pattern.
And for colors, grouping cools/warms or shades of the same color generally works well for quick and easy color schemes. You can also throw in whites and/or black with anything.
Example: greens and blues with cream
There’s also websites like this- Create a Palette - Coolors
You may not be able to get perfect matches, but having something to work off of might make choosing colors easier.
