Yarn Storage with Labels 🧶🏷️

For those of you that work with different weights of yarn, how do you store it after you’ve taken off the label? Do you have a way of storing the labels and marking the yarn or do you just rely on memory and hope for the best?

I’d love to see or hear about your storage solutions especially if you’ve found a good method for knowing which yarn is which after you’ve taken off the label

I usually wrap my yarn into cakes and cut the color info to put in the center. I can usually remember the size and hook info since is basically the same for most of the skeins that I buy. I can recognize where I bought the yarn based off of that color label

If you think you’ll need the whole label, then you can just roll it up and place it in the middle if you plan on wrapping your yarn

I also have a notebook filled with the labels and a small cut of the yarn taped to them (though I haven’t used that in a while )

If my label comes off it’s because I cake it, then, I roll the label and stick it in the middle of the cake. Ball of yarn? I put in the center of the round label and it holds it in place. Mostly, I have tubs that have the same weights / brands together, so I know they are all the same.

I place mine in big clear ziplock bag and place the information part of the label in the bag. Then store the bags in a basket on top of my yarn shelving unit.

I use an app called YarnBuddy. It’s where I keep all my projects, I have a place for future projects and it tracks my current WIPs as well. There’s also a “stash” section where I fill in the information of all my current yarn and can keep track of how much I have of each and what it looks like. I’m terrible at keeping the labels:woozy_face:

There’s also a Stash section here on Ribblr

I was thinking of the notebook option. I’ve been debating getting a yarn winder and the rolled up label in the middle would work perfectly! Have you encountered any issues with your yarn winder with bulky/super bulky yarn? I’m wondering if you could cake an entire skein or if you have to cut part of the way through if it gets too big

I’ve seen the stash section but I couldn’t really wrap my head around the purpose of taking the time to log/inventory your yarn when you could literally just look at what you have on-hand. Now I’m starting to get it!

No issues with bulky (5) or super bulky (6)! Both fit well with the yarn winder with a bit of space still!

A normal sized skein will fit (with a bit of going over, but still winds up)! You may have to make more cakes if you get a jumbo skein though!

Awesome! Thank you! Do you have a manual winder or electric?

I have a manual! I’m a bit low on space in my yarn bin, so manual makes it easier to make tight cakes :ok_hand:t2:

Good point! Thank you!

Yes, cake them, roll up the label and stick it in the center of the cake.

When you have many bins of yarn between the apartment and storage unit an inventory (as well as where they are) is needed.
By the way, I’ve stashed a lot in Ravelry but actually like how Ribblr scans the label and puts in the info for you. However, getting ALL the info into Ribblr Stash is not consistent. But it may be how the “ camera” is looking at the yarn.
