hi yall!
so, i may or may not have a problem of hoarding overstocking on yarn. my shelves are full as heck and i just have skeins of yarn either lying on my floor or creating an incomprehensible mound on my desk (i really need to clean my desk).
i was looking into getting a yarn winder and i was wondering if it would help with storage efficiency? if not, then i’d love any other suggestions, too.
edit: i would also like some cost efficient options for yarn winders too!!
i would also like to know what other things i need when handling/working with yarn cakes, cause i’m not really sure, but it would be prefered for me to not throw the whole cake across the floor lol.
I have a yarn winder and I absolutely love it it really helps me with storage cuz cakes and compact and ready easy to stack. The one I got was like $30 can
is there anything i need to put the cake on for it to just stay put while im working? ive been seeing those paper towel holder-like things and im not sure if that’s necessary or not
It’s not necessary! I don’t put anything on mine and it stays perfectly together! I will recommend pulling the last few rows tightly so the end stays put when you tuck it in, but it’s perfectly fine how it is!
I do add in the cut of the yarn label (with the yarn info on it) last! The yarn stays on the winder pretty well. If you put the label/roll on the winder, the yarn tends to move up on the winder for the first few wraps arounds since there’s not really any grip for the yarn.
So far I’ve used medium and chunky weight yarn since those are the only weights I work with, and it fits both!
ooh okay im a little slow so i dont understand this fully yet, but i think when i do get a winder i’ll see what you mean lol (or maybe i just need to sleep some more)
yooo thats awesome that it worked out for you, im really excited to snag one for myself so i can finally get my sad desk cleaned its so messy that im too embarassed to even snap a picture
i was thinking of an electric one but im afraid that the og skein will have a knot and its gonna mess it up ;-; so id rather do it manually, i need to work my arms out anyway haha
I have just spent 3 weeks winding my entire stash for moving to storage… I used my little $7 winder from Temu and it did everything except the huge ones (pound of love, full size #6 bulky, etc).
I got a system- I used a tall mason jar on the floor under where the winder was attached to my table and a yarn caddy on the table across from it.
I put my yarn in the jar, then brought it up and made a loop on the yarn caddy and then put it into the guide on the winder.
That gave the yarn plenty of space and gravity to untwist any tangles and it made a little resistance for winding evenly. If I had an electric winder… but I could crank as fast as I wanted.
I listened to all 7 HP audiobooks and got it done!
