I highly recommend an automatic winder! I have the etcokei brand that I ordered from Amazon! And I love it!

I been wondering is a cake maker really needed?? :face_with_monocle::face_with_monocle: I usually just roll mine into balls and toss them in my cube storage :joy: I been debating on getting one tbh.

Stanwood. Large. 10 oz. (does larger skeins) I’ve had it for years and would definitely get another if needed.

Here are some I found, my friend has the one on the far right and it’s REALLY fast and good for its price.

I know the Stanwood ball winder is supposed to be the best one on the market.

I would use a Caydo electric yarn winder, most of the time it’s on sale on amazon

I have an old one by Knitters Pride, but I have no idea what there is currently. Happy early birthday!

Alright, the plastic ones that you can find cheap on Amazon are fine, but with finer threads and yarns they are only as good as the dirt you walk on. It’s worth it to ask for a higher quality if you feel comfortable, preferably one from a craft shop. Mine’s an old one for a thrift shop, but previously I had one from Knit Picks that did me well enough!

I mostly use acrylic and plush, so I think the plastic should be fine?

i also have this one!! i got the pink version to match my brand aesthetic haha. i absolutely love it! i used to have a manual yarn winder but it took way too long. i’d definitely recommend this one! it winds the yarn pretty fast and i haven’t had many issues with tangling, but it does stop when the yarn gets tangled!

Haha, I have the white one lol! Samesiesss! Yess, that’s why I wanted an electric on instead of manual because my cousin has a manual one and it looked like too much effort lmao. Yup!! Though if it’s a tiny knot it just winds it in but for larger knots and tangles it stops.

Is it needed? No, not really. I also used to spend hours rolling up all my yarn into balls, haha. But there are some great things with making cakes out of yarn; 1. You’ll always have a center pull, 2. All the mess with yarn tangling itself up is almost solved (except the outer layers of the cake sometimes), 3. It makes your yarn stackable, 4. Takes much less time rolling it up than a ball does) 5. You can store the yarn label inside the cake (something hard to do with a ball - I used to index and number tag mine :joy:), 6. Maybe the most powerful point is that it won’t roll away, haha.
Though I will only cake up yarn I’ve either needed to wash (like yarn from thrift stores), or intend to use very soon; that’s my personal preference anyway.

Anyway, for the yarn winder - if you use heavy weight yarns, make sure that you’ll get one that can handle the pressure. Plastic ones and smaller ones (like mine because I didn’t know too much when I bought it) start creaking and clicking from too much weight, and I’ve needed to separate bigger skeins of chenille into 3 cakes instead of having one big one. The clicking likely comes from the gears when the handle is turned and the sprocket (or whatever the part turning the cogs is called) can’t handle it - you don’t want that for your machine

Welp you probably just sold me on it  I do have a yarn bowl so that helps the balls rolling away, but the stacking and middle pull :face_with_monocle::face_with_monocle::thinking: plus I wash every single skein I buy soo I almost always have to untangle them.
