3dctog decrease in American?

I’m currently translating a pattern from European to American vernacular and I’ve realized I don’t know the American equivalent of a 3dctog stitch - essentially a decrease stitch that combines three stitches into one instead of two.

Does anyone know the American abbreviation for this stitch? Google isn’t being particularly helpful lol

I’m not sure, that would be pulling up a loop from three stitches and pulling them together right?

… tbh, idk if there is one. Maybe just write dec 3 together? Idk how to do that tho, so…

What Axo said, but probably explain how to do the stitch as well. People might get confused.

I think it’s just dc3tog (for DC) sc3tog (for sc) ect

If I were you I would say 3dec and explain it beforehand.

Oh yeah, but it would be sc3tog, not dc3tog right?

Yeah, I realized that too late lol

Yup, that’s right.

I think you’re likely right, and as others have suggested I should probably explain the stitch in a note to avoid confusion.

Thanks, all! :heavy_heart_exclamation:

As an aside, when I’m writing a pattern in long-hand, or picking up an old printed pattern I’m constantly forgetting which ‘language’ I’m meant to be using.

@Ribblr is an absolute godsend in that regard - I’m seriously considering entering all my patterns and just not publishing them so I don’t have to second guess the translation lol

It translates it for you right?

It does!

Then i’m confused, you said you weren’t going to publish them since you didn’t want to translate them.

I usually write 3tog but i dunno what it is officially

Ah, no - I meant I wasn’t going to publish them because they’re not my patterns. They’re patterns I’ve purchased elsewhere.

Oh okay I misunderstood.

I just did a pattern with this in it. They explained at the top of the pattern and it was put as sc3tog.

Personally I use 3-dec and explain in the notes that it is a triple decrease. It isn’t used a lot so I don’t know if there is an official other than sc3tog

Its the same thing, just SC vs DC since American/US terminology is sc for UK DC. 3SCTOG is the most commonly used that I have seen or if the entire pattern is SC a simple 3TOG would suffice. This is coming from my personal experience of over 15 years crochet experience
