☆ adhd/focus tips for fellow goobers ☆

hey everyone :3

i decided to makw this post bc there seems to be a seemingly large overlap between people who crochet and people who are neurodivergent SO i have come up with a list of focusing hacks that have helped me recently and i hope they help you to!

feel free to add any below :3 originally this was gonna be a wiki post but idk if i lost that when i lost regular status or if they just straight up got rid of it :sob::broken_heart:

  1. candle trick
when you sit down to work, light a candle. if you get distracted for more than a minute, blow out the candle and re-light it. your goal is to use the entire candle with as little blows as possible. keep track of it somewhere and DONT LOSE IT! treat it like a little minigame :]

  2. paint by number
so, find a paint by number on google or pinterest, print it out, and put it somewhere you can see it. every time you do work for a specified amount of time (for me its an hour,) color in a section. try to finish it in as little days as possible

  3. timelapse
you know how phones exist? and how you want to use them? dont. when you work, timelapse record yourself and pretend you are a productivity influencer. you cant turn it off until you are done working (or you need it for work)

  4. virtual cottage/flocus.com + to-do list
okay, i know pomodoros are notoriusly annoying for ppl w adhd. butttt i believe i have found a way to hack it.

if you DO have a computer with steam:
get the free virtual cottage application. its a pomodoro timer with lofi, background noise, and a to-do list, all in one. keeps you nice and organized. its not amazingly polished, however they are coming out with a much better one soon!

if you DONT have a computer with steam:
go to flocus.com on your device. admittedly, its not as good as virtual cottage. theres no noise to drown out stray thoughts or a to-do list built in without paying extra. however, its a nice, customizable timer. then, write a to-do list down somewhere.

now, in your to-do list, dont write down big tasks like “finish algebra homework.” break it down! “finishing algebra homework” is at least a four step process. try to pick a reasonable amount of tasks to finish in your pomodoro time and race against the clock to finish them. dont finish them? dont take a break, reduce the amount of tasks, and try again. if you do, you get a break. congrats! :tada:

i hope these helped! if you have any extra tips, please leave them below!

I don’t have a problem with not focusing, I have problems with focusing too much, crocheting for 7-8 hours straight, and getting repetitive stress injuries :D

actually nevermind- * ignores pile of overdue math and Researchers assignments overdue *

i have a box of cookies and i only eat one if i clean my room while eating it, so it slows down eating the cookie and motivates me. it worked pretty well until my uncle ate all of them while i was gone.

Hyperfixation is a HUGE problem, or your very best friend, if you are fixated on the right thing. That is what i need is to hyperfixate on the right thing at the right times.
