I was just getting my daily 15 gems from watching ads to make back what I spent for the gem patterns and I kept getting the AI ad for Cash Avalanche, which looks to be a slots game as well as a different slots game. I have strong opinions on generative AI and I know itās not Ribblrās fault but itās disappointing to see how slowly normalized using AI in anything to replace human work for marketing or art or literally anything else. While I understand that it can be a help I would like to see it used as a tool rather than something to do all the work, and AI ads like that donāt even look that good in my opinion, it seems to realistic to look fake. Just needed to rant and figured that a common ground is @lirās post on AI patterns, I think that if anything if generative AI is continued to be used this way as something to just make something quick for the use of making money or saving time I think it takes away from the human factor of it. I also think it could be used for good, like using it to help you figure out a problem instead of just solving it for you, art tips or other useful information, or color wheels for example and helping you learn it or grasp the idea, or other tools of the like, but I donāt how generative AI could be of help. I would love to see it being used as a tool but I guess every good thing has a bad thing to it, just wanted to rant a little and see what everyone thinks about the whole idea of it
This is just a personal opinion and I know I canāt do anything to change what people do but maybe thisāll do something on a relatable perspective. Happy crafting, and hope you all are having a great week!
The AI ads are super jarring to see on a platform so adamantly against the use of generative AI.
I get that it helps bring funding to the platform, however itās very disjointed to have something like that here.
On the topic of AI for āgoodā, generative AI to create color wheels or drawing references are not a good use of AI as a tool. The AI still had to pull all of that data from real humans that put their own hard work into each piece that AI scrapes and mashes together, typically without the original artists permission or even knowledge.
A good example of AI being used as a tool are things weāve already been using AI for, for many years. Medical and Environmental data analysis. Accessibility tools like screen readers. Overall data analysis where a machine has the capability of sorting through data in seconds that might take a human years.
The recent advancements in cancer screenings are astounding, along with being able to analyze MRIs and X-Rays for a multitude of other problems that a human doctor may not be able to catch until further along in a diseases development.
AI for data analysis can be used in amazing ways as well, from helping track endangered species and allowing us to understand how humans can help them better. Natural disaster predictions and preventions also use AI for their models.
However, AI does not belong in any art spaces in any capacity. Generative AI does not have the capability to create. It pulls from its stolen database and mashes things together based on keyword data you feed it. Itās not creating, itās combining. There is no art in it. There is no thought. And there are already so many resources out there to help learn color theory, how to draw, and if you really think thatās still out of your wheelhouse, there are so many real people out there who have put the time and effort into those skills who can be commissioned to create whatever it is that youāre looking for.
Iāve also noticed a lot of AI generated images being used as profile pictures here and itās just so strange to see. That art came from somewhere. Was stolen from someone.
I think itās just truly disheartening to see where everything is headed down this GenAI crapshoot. And I cannot wait for that bubble to burst.
Yeah I hate ai too
I was talking to my dad on it the other day and he was talking about how everyone was against photoshop and that it would ruin the photographers or artists that go in and manually change photos but now everyone has accepted photoshop and those people still have jobs and that weāll have to accept that AI will be apart of our lives wether or not we like it. Even if the subjects are different generative AI can still do so much more than photoshop and itās disappointing to see and I donāt want to just go and accept it when it can be used as a bad thing especially with images and videos generated with it I donāt even want to know how people could use that to their advantage for all the wrong reasons. Hopefully it will die down and not be so prominent because I will miss the human effect of it but I canāt just combat it as one person because itās simply an opinion so I canāt do much more than speak how I feel.
Yeah, the difference between making digital art with Photoshop or even Clip Studio Paint (the program I use, alongside Procreate) is that the artist is still manually doing the work. Hours and hours of time, and knowledge go into each piece and the human is the one making the decisions on how to create the piece. This is a good example of a tool for artists.
GenAI that scrapes data and steals from real people based on a few words inputted by a user is not the same ![]()
AI as a tool to assist with the process? Great. AI as a replacement of the entire creative process? So so so bad on so many levels ![]()
I was thinking the same thing when trying to get my gems, also I find it ironic that on such a wonderful platform, we have adds promoting addictive apps
completely agree, I wish that could be seen or that weād overall just stop using GenAI or other things like SoraAI but I know some people would get upset with that so we just have to sit in the unknown if itāll get worse or if itāll fade out and stop being supported. Iāve seen a lot of recent posts on places like YouTube where real artists are coming out and explaining the difference between tools and something that does the work for you and that AI art isnāt real art. Other complaints Iāve heard is that AI art isnāt real art, which I agree, and that said AI artists claim that they canāt draw or do art very well then it cuts to the artists progression from being a child artist to where they are now today and I find that with practice anything you set out to do can be good even if its just in your eyes when it comes to talents. I was horrible at crochet and never imagined Iād ever make a pattern but now that I think back on it my first pattern was my own pattern and now I think Iām pretty good at the craft. Iām preaching to the choir here but I think its an issue thatās dismissed when it could be an issue of telling what is real and fake and using generative things incorrectly for immodest purposes
Keep preaching, this choir will always sing along against GenAI ![]()
I agree , anything thatās looks AI Iāll avoid . Even if say just the cover photo for a pattern is ai enhanced.. I will never trust the pattern isnt written using it . There is a lot of ai photos on here and I just wont buy not matter how good they look ..
There are designers ( not on here ) that I have purchased from for many years that have started using it .. sorry customer lost ..
Show me real photos ā¦
The sad thing is that a lot of new people to crochet and knitting are falling for these scammy ai patterns on a certain platform..
Ai is doing nobody any favours.
And everyone needs to be careful when buying patterns because AI is everywhere !!
I always get so annoyed when Iām on Etsy trying to buy a real pattern and half the results are AI slop, even if the pattern is real, the AI photos always seem sketchy
Thanks for sharing this! I completely understand where you are coming from.
Firstly, I agree it does not sound like a good fit for Ribblr.
The good news is that it is likely not something most people are seeing - neither the team nor I have come across this specific ad, or similar ones. The bad news is that we do not have a ton of control over every ad that appears.
The way ad-break works is that we connect to multiple partner networks, and then there is essentially a very quick bid for who gets the ad slot.
It is something very new that we are trying out. We are trying to find the right balance between giving people free ways to earn Gems, while also keeping the best value for Ribblr+ members who directly help support the platform.
That said, I do not like the sound of this either. I am going to check what we can do on this front. It may be that we can report certain ads or it may be that we need to rethink ad-watch altogether.
We are still learning here, so thank you for raising it!
Heyya!
Apologies if a direct reply is bothersome. Ads definitely serve a place for platforms like this, and Iām in full support of the way theyāve been integrated at this point. Theyāre unobtrusive in the app, and longer video ads are completely optional.
Iād be curious to see what options are available for ad support surrounding what is advertised, as I think the ad-break option is a great way for you guys to get some more monetary support, and for the members to opt in to longer video ads only if they want to.
Iād hate to see it go if itās bringing in decent funding for you guys. Maybe a disclaimer somewhere regarding that ads are entirely 3rd party and randomized could ease some of the tension it seems to be causing? I personally didnāt think Ribblr was necessarily hand-picking the ads being shown, however the piece of mind of a disclaimer would certainly let the masses know that ads are just a necessary evil of the internet now ![]()
I do find it quite interesting that it goes to an immediate bid for ad-slots. Another āfunā fact to pocket away with my multitude of other useless tidbits clogging my brain!
yeah, I love the 15 gems per day since I donāt usually get them on the wheel spin lol and currently canāt pay for Ribblr+ so would love the feature to stay but I have no idea how to combat those kinds of ads so Iām guessing weāll just have to deal with it or take that ad lister off the ads shown to us if thatās possible
Youāre absolutely right about the ads in Ribblr. At present theyāre the price we have to āpayā to maintain a āfreeā platform and are currently integrated in a way that isnāt detrimental to the use of the app. If they are providing Ribblr with decent funding then thatās fantastic. There is also the option of paying for the service if users donāt want to see the ads. ![]()
I see now that Ribblr may not have much of a choice as to what advertisements are shown on the platform. Perhaps they may, however, be able to take some of our feedback and pass it on to the relevant ābodyā for consideration.
As you mentioned above, a disclaimer may be helpful. When we understand the back story and can see that Ribblr may not have the control we initially thought they did, we are able to show more empathy.
As Ribblr stated, itās something new theyāre exploring.
Iām just so grateful that the Ribblr team, as small as they are, continue to communicate with us, listen to us and involve us in the shaping of this platform. ![]()
