so I have been experiencing major back and neck pain for the past few days that I have been crocheting. I just started crocheting from a super long break so my body might not have been used to it or something but I need advice on how to stop this. and my legs, whenever I sit down (which is for like 2hours a day for crocheting) my legs eventually become numb and I cant move any part of it from my bottom down. and then it goes away but starts stabbing pain in my leg for a few minutes. I just wanted to know if anybody has experienced this and if you have tips
Ik I probably sound stupid but have you tried doing back/neck stretches? I can’t personally recommend some bc I don’t have this issue but I’m sure there are some good ones online that can help you!
I’m not sure about what to do for your leg issue. That might be a circulation issue. I would suggest talking to your doctor about that. As for your neck/back pain a support pillow might be helpful. I was having some of those issues with my neck and back from crocheting for long hours and my mother-in-law gave me a support pillow. It’s made a world of difference for me. You can get nursing pillows for support for a fairly decent price or make your own support pillow. Just a suggestion. I do agree that doing stretches for your back is important to do too.
As a fellow crocheter with diagnosed back problems (scoliosis) my back hurts constantly so I totally understand where you’re coming from. I would recommend trying new places to crochet in your house and seeing if that woke be more comfortable and also having something like a pills behind your back to support it! Hope that helps
I would definitely follow up with your dr. But a few things i do to help( back injury following an auto accident)- sit on a pillow, but make sure the place you are sitting on is firm and not too low. Ice pack on low back helps- I crochet alot in the evening, so I take a soft ice pack to bed and lay on it to reduce the inflammation. Stretching is going to be your biggest help- gentle leg and low back stretches- you can also ask your dr for recommendations on stretches- mine gave me a little booklet of stretches for leg/ back pain. Hope this helps some, but definitely call your dr and get seen.
thats sounds horrible! i’ve never had anything like this but maybe you could try elevating your legs and supporting your back and neck with pillows and stuff like that. I also think you should probably see your doctor- especially for the legs problem
Ouuchh, like everybody else has said, my advice would be to make yourself a nest of pillows, and make sure you’re getting enough movement every day for your legs, especially if it’s a circulation thing. My joints are bleh, and I’ve noticed that my legs have been a lot better since I started getting more exercise, hopefully this helps you too!
You could also see if changing how you’re sitting and your posture time to time helps, I find that having variation is more helpful to prevent pain than having good posture is.
I have circulation problems and I will say you should straighten you’re legs and keep them at a lowered but angles position I don’t think you have cirulatary problems but my legs they just randomly give out but I think you should take every 30 mintunes to stretch and maybe go walk to a random place in you’re house then walk back to you’re crochet area. I will say if you tap you’re foot that helps to. You’re neck and back are hurting because you probably aren’t using go posture I would also recommend for you a heating pad so to summarize strech every 30 mintunes and sit up while you’re crocheting. Kepp in mine I’m not a specalist I don’t know everything but this is the stuff that helps me.
Until then. Do a shrimp check on your posture. Make sure you aren’t hunched over. Are you sitting strangely, cross-legged, or anything like that? Change positions often. Hydrate. Use pillows. Sit in a way so you can actually rest your head back some while you crochet for a bit. But don’t forget to talk to the doc about the numbness. The neck is probably from looking hunched down and a shrimp check should fix that.
Those things will cause my arms and legs to go numb, but I also have scoliosis, degeneration in my spine, and nerve damage in my arms and legs. Since childhood for much of it. Part genetic and part just not taking care of my self like I should have.
I experience neck, shoulder, hand and wrist pain from crocheting. As well as pain in my thumbs, along my pecs and down my arm.
I have low back pain and my legs will go numb at times too. Though I don’t know that these are related to crocheting. My legs go numb if I’m sitting in the same position for too long - probably bc I sit in weird positions.
I have hypermobility spectrum disorder and probably fibromyalgia. So my body engages the wrong muscles and I’m more prone to pain.
Things that help:
Neck and shoulder ice pack
Stretch neck, shoulder, arm, wrists and hands
Change positions often (for low back and leg numbness)
Heart opening yoga poses
Check my posture when I’m crocheting
Topical pain stuff
Heat, after ice, at times
Epson salt baths
Low inflammation diet
Turmeric supplement
Myocalm plus (a supplement)
Magnesium supplement
I’m gonna try supporting myself with the pillow - like others are suggesting.
If you’re able to find a place to do so, deadhanging is great! Deadhanging is where you hang from a bar or something, and let your whole body go limp for as long as possible! With practice you’ll be able to do this for a long enough time that it will stretch your spine, helping with that pain which is probably caused by the hunched form we all get when crocheting lol been there done that. Hope this helps, and if you don’t have somewhere to hang from, yoga is good as well! But don’t just focus on your neck back and legs, full body yoga is more likely to balance everything out and help with the pain! You could also try some light workouts, even if you have no equipment, and that could help! I never recommend going to a chiropractor, as I see this affect everyone around me in a negative way, but massage therapy is a good idea if nothing you try at home works! And if it continues for long enough, seeing a doctor would be beneficial. Good luck!
I don’t know if mine is caused by crocheting but my shoulders and back hurt a lot too! I’m actually going to the chiropractor today lol! Any way the leg thing might be low blood circulation i have that and when my legs are still for too long they will swell up and feel really uncomfortable. You might try different sitting positions or get a posture corrector. I don’t know tho I’m not an expert lol! I hope you fix your back soon!
I have hypermobilty and fibromyalgia too. Hypermobilty is fun huh. Lol. I accidentally dislocated my hips sitting cross legged and my husband has learned how to pop it back. Hurts so much and it’s very sore afterwards but it happens so often. My shoulder has popped out just turning the steering wheel driving. I have gone to PT to learn several methods to stabilize the joints better and keep them in place and how to get them back in place more easily. My kids have it too and are dancers like I was. I am now constantly teaching them strength training to protect their joints while they also stretch their banana legs and arms. Lol Hypermobilty is a blessing and can be a curse at times.
for the neck and back pain I would get 90 degre angled glasses so you can maybe lie down it may help. but for the leg pain I would probably see a docter
I’m sorry you deal with them too! It can be no fun! Esp with the dislocations. Luckily I’ve never dislocated things knocks on wood. Mine is relatively mild (though I do deal with the related conditions - POTS, IBS, migraines etc.
I think I sometimes sublax my hips when sitting in a car too long (usually on road trips) and have to pop things back in. Sprained ankles like 10 times and some so bad that I’ve broken bones.
glad you’re teaching your kids about stability snd strengthing!
I need to find a HSD/hEDS competent PT - just got diagnosed last week.
