callus keeps splitting - help

hello everyone! so i have a callus on my middle finger from crochet. it’s from where the hook hits my finger when i put it in a stitch. now, as you can tell from the title, it has split open again. not only does this really hurt, it renders me unable to crochet for an entire day. that may not seem to bad, but crocheting takes up a lot of my day, both with my business and personal projects. do any of you have advice for keeping your calluses (if you have them) from splitting open?

maybe try putting a bandaid on it ?

I have plenty from various stuff! (Also had a random blister.) My recommendation- tape! Add a lil tape around your finger (not too tight) and it keeps the yarn from rubbing your skin.

medical tape or like scotch tape

idk if it will help but you could put a band-aid on it, it would keep the hook from hitting the skin

Before it splits open put a piece of tape on it. It doesn’t effect your speed if crochet but it protects that part of your finger. I tried it and I helps.

Yeah, the tape, or liquid band-aid. Other wise, sorry good luck!:weary:

Ok, this may sound strange, but for dance I use a type of bandaid called moleskin for blisters and callouses. It’s basically just a thicker bandaid that you can cut to whatever size you want. I tried it once for a callous on my hand while crocheting and it worked pretty well because it sticks better than most typical bandaids.

I have put super glue or something equivalent in the area and squeeze close. Has worked great for me

One of my doctors recommended the super glue tip too, he said that surgeons do it to keep their hands from splitting and bleeding because their skin gets super dried out from having to wash their hands so much.

I got Gel fi ger protectors from Amazon. Brand is Kris-Kikomy. They work great and don’t interfere with my crocheting. About $9.

It won’t help immediately, but if it keeps splitting then it could be a sign of dry skin. I’d recommend moisturizing more often, especially since (at least for the northern hemisphere) it’s winter and colder. Where i am it’s really cold and dry so making sure your skin isn’t too dry can really help. So more hand lotion, maybe some Vaseline on your calluses when you aren’t crocheting, it can really help.

my mom just said the same thing actually. im a huge germaphobe so i wash my hands a ton so that probably explains it. im gonna pick up some hand lotion tomorrow at the store
