Man i haven’t painted in a hot minute. I use acrylic paint. I have painted abstract, colorful landscapes, i have painted a tribute pieces to my dieties (ima norse pagan). If you arent comfortable with canvas painting flowers, stars and moon, hearts…etc easy shapes, with color variety is easy fun place to start. It may help to practice what you wanna do on a paper/cardboard before putting on canvas incase you do like something, you have opportunity to change something before hand… ive learned this from experience. 
I have a 3 month old baby so painting is a bit difficult at the moment. Hope this helps
