hi there! I’ve been thinking of taking up knitting for a little bit now and was wondering if i should start with circular needles or regular ones as a beginner. also, what would be a good starting project? i don’t want to be too ambitious and then not touch it again like the last time i tried to learn. thanks for reading!
Straight needles are the easiest to start with. They help you get used to the feel of the needles in your hand and get you used to the rhythm of the stitches
I would start with larger needles and worsted and do a straight back and forth project like a scarf
Definitely start with straght needles - as you learn more about knitting, you will want to use circular needles for almost every project, but straight needles are so much easier to hold when you are still practicing your stitches.
As for a project, I found a dishcloth/washcloth to be the easiest first project. Scarves take so long to finish that it can be dismaying, and the urge to just stop midway gets pretty strong. But a washcloth is more gratifying.
I can link patterns if you need.
when you say larger, what mm size exactly? sorry to ask, i just want to be sure i get the right kind
if you have time to link some patterns id love to look through them!
Sure thing! Can they be off Ribblr, or no?
sure! im open to any patterns you may have ![]()
Ok, give me a sec! I somehow lost the pattern I used for my fiest one, so Im hunting for it now!
I think anything between size 7 and 9 would work
okay, i was thinking of a size 8 so i guess im on track!
Here are some! I’m going to keep looking, though, bc apparently the pattern I used no longer exists. ![]()
thanks so much!!
No problem!! These are worked horizontally instead of diagonally, so they may be a little easier. The one I used was horizontal, which is why I liked it so much ![]()
I have a ridiculous amount of knitting needles for not being a knitter but are the straight needles/ circular needles are the ones that are separated and connected? Just wondering
Yes!
This one here on Ribblr is targeted for beginners, and looks fairly simple:
Ok thanks!
I would start with wooden needles because the yarn doesn’t slip off as easily! For a first project i’d go with a scarf or any other thing you can make out of a big square/rectangle (tote bag, etc.)
I’m not a professional or anything, but I would suggest getting large, probably like 10mm regular needles and a bulky yarn, and then just making a swatch to learn the basic knit stitch and once you learn that maybe try starting an easy project like a dishcloth. Then if you find that you really like knitting and want to stick with it, maybe invest in a set of interchangeable circular needles.
This is all what I did when I started out knitting (as a crocheter), and I guess it worked well for me cuz I’ve already made socks and a sweater and I’m working on a cardigan and I’m really loving it
Good luck!
I’d start with circulars! Specifically interchangable circulars. I got mine for 23$ and haven’t looked back. Everything you can do on straights can be done on circulars! My first (and current, knitting takes me a bit coz I start multiple projects at once) is too difficult for beginners but I’m doing the “patons summer cardigan” by yarnspirations
