Clothing Question

So I am very interested in starting to make cardigans and other clothing but I don’t know how to start. So if you have any ideas or tips on how to start please let me know.

If you are good at drawing please draw some cardigan ideas and post them down below.

you should crochet them in panels, and attach later. also make sure you use the same hook size for each panel.

Here’s a cardigan pattern I used to make one with premier puzzle yarn which is a 5 weight. You can make it in a lighter weight yarn too. It works up pretty easily with just 5 panels to make. You even start from the ribbing so you don’t have to worry about it afterwards.

The best way to start is with a panel construction piece!

I’d look up some inspo pics on Pinterest if you have it, if you don’t let me know of some ideas and I can find some for you! Or YouTube is also really good! But, ya, I’d say it depends on the cardigan you want!

i construct my cardigans like this! i crochet the sleeves straight on, so i’ll only have to sew the sides and under the sleeves together :) then i can add the ribbing!

this way also doesn’t leave shoulder seams. it’s very adaptable to many stitches and leaves the freedom for any designs!

also drew on some arrows to demonstrate the crocheting direction :)

you start the body from the circled corner and the sleeves later on from the triangles :3

hope this helps! i love this way of making cardigans, i hate sewing lmao.

I know you also wanted to make sweaters, so I included both how to do a sweater and a cardigan! This is just the basic construction, beyond that I would say:

  1. If you are selling the pattern, make it as customizable as possible! You can have set sizes ofc, but people love when they can make it to measure their body. To do this, you just tell people what the stitches are, what yarn, and how to construct it, and then they can make it off of their own body measurements.
  2. Start with a drawing/basic idea of the parts/panels. For visual people like myself and just in general, it is super helpful to know what you’re making and see how many panels you need to make etc. Also make notes of the details too, like if you are going to do ribbing at the end of the sleeves and such.
  3. If you do make a sweater, I’d recommend a v neck sweater. It doesn’t have to be deep, but they’re pretty easy to make (A panel for the back, a panel for the front but you decrees on each side to make the v neck, and sleeves)
  4. There are several ways to make clothing! Taking a cardigan, for example, you could crochet the back panel, and then keep crocheting one half of that back panel, fasten off, crochet the other half, and now you have your back penal and your front panel without having to seam up the sleeves. So there are a lot of ways to construct clothing! Any pattern worth its salt will have diagrams on how to construct it, or have really detailed instructions. And that’s about it! I put the lil video down below, I’ll try to make a more detailed on later with an actual cardigan I crocheted with me actually explaining.

Ok, so apparently the video with me sketching out the construction on not allowed…but I will make some pictures to help you. Soon!

I recommend a granny hexagon cardigan. They are easy, fun, and really nice to wear.

Hey, I know its kind of late for advice, but if you are looking to start making clothes(especially cardigans and sweaters) check out Make & Do Crew…she gives a lot of helpful advice and has countless free patterns.

I second that! She also offers a course on sizing. I took the course, it’s pretty good.

Highly suggest watching a YouTube video! Cardigans are pretty much ginormous granny squares but folded to a certain degree! I was able to make a bikini cover from watching a video in a nother language !
