Let me expand on my advice:
A lot of shoppers don’t care to chat much or don’t want to feel like they have to…which is typically why I wouldn’t suggest trying to chat with people unless they make the first move after the initial greet and let them know you’re there basically.
I know I won’t stick around a stand where the vendor is asking me questions or whatever else. Feels overbearing a bit.
It’s great to greet people, smile, let them know you’re there…but leave them be afterwards unless they start talking to you. If they are around for a bit, you can ask if they need any help…but outside of that…I wouldn’t advise trying to converse with them unless they initiate a conversational exchange.
If they make a purchase, you can ask them if they found everything okay or if they have any questions…whatever fits, and you can make polite conversation while you get them checked out if you want. Usually people are more open to chatting once they are at checkout.
I’ve had many years in customer service, and being a vendor at a market is essentially customer service. These are just my observations from being both the person behind the counter and the consumer.
