I started out putting them in the first stitch. Most patterns designate it that way. Later, I saw someone putting it in the last. I thought, “that’s nuts! Why on earth would you put it in the last stitch?”
After struggling with forgetting to put the stitch marker in the first stitch numerous times - and not remembering where it had been because I was still holding it in my mouth - I tried putting it in the last stitch. Since then, I rarely forget to put the stitch marker back in after each round.
So in summary, it is subjective. There is no right or wrong way. It’s different for each crafter.

I tried last Stich but I was so confused so I always do first stitch
