A small, low-growing plant with deep pink to white flowers. Traditionally, the roots were gathered and used for food and trade in Native American culture. Never Harvest these unless accompanied by a Native American elder who gives you permission.
Today’s Bird is the……….Western Meadowlark
The western meadowlark has distinctive calls described as watery or flute-like, which distinguish it from the closely related eastern meadowlark. The western meadowlark is the state bird of six states: Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, and Wyoming.
It’s a common songbird found in prairies, grassy valleys, and sagebrush flats. Meriwether Lewis recorded the bird in his journal during the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1805. Montana schoolchildren voted for the Western Meadowlark as the bird that best represented their state in 1930.
