Just saw a video that said āpeopleā tried to create a strong character with Katniss, but actually sheās badly written because ā all the good things she does are actually just district 13ā.
Because apparently according to this person, manipulation, and propaganda are ā good thingsā. The point of the book wasnāt for Katniss to single-handedly take down the government, she was literally being used by 13.
And then they called her a terrible person, and selfish, and gave no elaboration. First of all, Katniss is remarkably selfless for someone with so much trauma who has to live in such a cruel world. Second of all, there would be nothing wrong with her being selfish as a character because. As I said above, she lives in such a cruel world!!! Not to mention they never acknowledged her mental health issues or PTSD and just said it was her being a [b word].
I guess they just wanted her to be a perfect character who never did anything wrong and had no survival instincts after years of trauma.
And the person saying this in the video was an adult too. How do you read a book and it goes that over your head? Maybe it was rage bait, but Iām not sure cause it looks to be part of a podcast or something like that.
I donāt think thereās anything wrong with me talking about thisā¦? I really needed to get it off my chest and I donāt really have a lot of friends who are hunger games fans, but if I need to delete it for any reason, let me know and I will. If yāall wanna talk about why Katniss is a good protagonist, or have any actually good, backed up by the source material critiques of her, please do so in replies!! <3

I HATE when adults do that. for some reason one of my teachers is convinced that katniss is one of the worst written characters ever, whoās super selfish and all that, but when you really read it, all that it shows is that sheās super selfless. everything she does is for prim. she first survives the games to take care of prim, and eventually peeta. she tries to sacrifice herself in the second games for peeta. she takes down the government because they killed her sister. she does everything because itās for someone else.

Exactly. I canāt believe people see someone having survival instincts, and trauma, and call it being unlikable and a terrible person. Like theyāre criticizing a flaw that Katniss doesnāt even really have, and acting like she should be a perfectly happy well adjusted person after watching her father die, her mother sink into depression, and having to become the caretaker for her family at age 11. Also why are they acting like itās bad for a character to have flaws in general?? Flaws are super important so you donāt write a boring Mary character who gets everything right and does nothing wrong (cough cough the disneyfied star wars sequels). If Katniss was some perfect character hunger games would be unrealistic and boring.

Yes, exactly!! Calling her selfish when she literally was all out basically giving her life to save Peeta and wanting him to live instead of her, and when she volunteered for her sister Iām the ultimate selfless actā
