hey ribblians, uhhh i felt like posting something so here’s some niche animal crossing trivia
(also i’m sorry i haven’t posted anything craft related in a while. ribblr gods i pray that you do not silence me or something)
so in the north american version of animal crossing for the gamecube, there is a very small chance that an unused paper airplane item will appear in your town due to a bit flip, which is when a digit of binary code changes from 1 to 0, or 0 to 1. this can happen because of the console aging or not being properly cared for. there’s some more stuff about hex id’s and stuff there but i don’t care to explain it. anyways, attempting to throw it will softlock you*, and throwing an item on it will destroy it. however, if you reload the overworld, the paper airplanes will duplicate and spread to other acres. eventually the game will crash attempting to render all of these paper airplanes, and if you save after this your game is essentially unplayable and you’ll have to erase your town. so if you somehow come across this, make sure to reset.
*the softlock happens because during the throwing animation, the game is told to ignore all player input so it can properly complete the animation. however, since the item is unused, the code is unfinished and the game is never told to start receiving input again. so you are forced to reset

ooh yes the gyroid face? i’ve heard abt that one :] fun fact some people think it’s a bug but it’s actually an intentional feature (which is surprising considering the og animal crossing’s code is held together with duct tape and prayers), maybe to scare people into not resetting

Now on a serious note let’s dive into CAM Photosynthesis
ill save you from the bigbig names
CAM Crassulalcean Acid Metabolism appears in dessert plants, where water is scarce. And what do plants need for photosynthesis? Water and Carbon dioxide. Now the desert has an abundance of CO2, but the air is dry and there’s little rainfall, so if they open the leaf pores to take in CO2, they get dehydrated because water escapes through the leaf pores if they’re open.
And then CAM Evolved
CAM allows desert plants to open their leaf pores at night when water loss is waaaaaay smaller than during the scorching heat, but then you might ask, how do they photosynthesize, there’s no light for chlorophyll to make ATP or NADPH which power the Calvin cycle making sugar…
The solution is malic acid, an organic acid made by the enzyme PEP Carboxylase, and the said acid can be dismantled for carbon atoms needed for sugar production. Malic acid is storable and can wait till the sun rises and is then converted into usable carbon for sugar production.
Then there’s also C3 which is the standard photosynthesis
And C4, very similar to CAM but with a catch, the leaf is comprised of multiple layers of cells, and with C4 it’s just the outer most cells that open their pores to get CO2, which then gets transported to the middle of the leaf where RuBisCO makes sugar. They are so efficient at binding CO2 that they can keep their pores closed half the day cutting down water loss significantly.
