so i wanna make a new crohet pattern aka my FIRST crochet pattern but i cant decide if i want to base it off someone elses pattern and credit them for the inspo or make something totally new with no guide
Freehand something new! But write it down of course.
Something with no guideline! You can of course use what you have learned from other patterns, but make it your own!
Do your own idea and make it your own. Using other people’s ideas can get you into trouble and be viewed as copying them
It depends on what you mean and the degree of the similarities. If you had one of my sweater patterns, and you thought to yourself “I kind of like it, but I would rather use this stitch, and make the body this shape, and construct the body this way” and someone looking at the picture or the the schematic or even working both patterns would not think that they were the same pattern, but you did get the spawn from my pattern… That is your pattern.
If you did the sweater exactly the same but only used a different stitch, or just made the sleeves longer, that is still my pattern even if you credit me, I would be irked beyond belief that you had the nerve to publish it at all, even if you gave it away for free, because those were still my profits you took out of my pocket by giving away my pattern for free.
At least that is one designers opinion.
no like changing the colors and then cropping it also adding lettering or pics to it or changing the style of the sleeves just taking some parts and changing it while still using it as a basic guide
if that makes sense
nope, that would be copying.
Draw a schematic of what you want and do the math to figure out your own way to get there.
im actually doing that rn so thx
But as I said, if you were to place the two patterns next to each other and see nothing copied and they don’t look the same when finished, then there was no reason to credit anyone. We have all seen a sweater before, there are only so many ways to make one.
your right i should listen to my conscience and make original work

I know it’s a little late, but I hope this helps!
