With working yarn being held in your left hand, what do righty’s do about a ring?
I’ve been practicing crocheting with my off-hand, which means right-handed for this lefty.
I’ve run into a situation that doesn’t apply when I crochet left-handed:
When crocheting right-handed, I have the hook in my right, and the working yarn
in my left. I have a wedding ring
on my left hand, so my normal way of holding the working yarn sometimes snags on my ring.
Is this an issue for right-handed people? How do you avoid your ring, if you have one? I guess I could hold the yarn different, or move my ring to the other hand temporarily. It might not be an issue once I’m more practiced and have smoother tension in my off-hand crocheting, but it’s like starting at the beginning of crocheting again.
If you hold yarn in a way that passes over your ring finger and you have a ring, is the yarn in front of the ring, or behind?
Any tips to help would be appreciated.

How do you hold the yarn normally?

Right handed crochet
It’s a problem with plush yarns too.

So you regulate tension with your pinky? Does your pinky get tired?
I like holding the yarn the way I do because I can still hear my grandma teaching me how to weave the yarn through my fingers to hold it. “You know it’s right when it looks like a ring on your ring finger.”

I tried it your way, and almost instantly my pinky started yelling at me. I guess it’s not used to having to work. I’m impressed at your pinky strength. I’m sure the digit would be fine once it’s used to it, so I’ll keep that in mind as an option.

i wrap my yarn around my pinky then bring it over my index finger - learned it from the woobkes. i don’t have a pic to show rn, but here is their video:
idk if this will help, since obv i don’t have a ring, but maybe you could tag some other (married) adults who you know are RH? for example marilyn?

Honestly i dont think i actually regulate tension, i use my pinky keep the yarn close to my hand

Well, the Woobles way goes near the ring too, even says to keep the yarn towards the back of the hand so it doesn’t slip off.
@HookedByMarilyn does your ring ever get in the way? How do you deal with it?

K. I tried your method. It does avoid the ring, and none of my fingers are yelling at me, but the yarn gets stuck around the index finger a bit. I’m sure with practice it would work. Does this grip work well with plush yarn too?

I wrap mine around my pinky, and then around my index finger. It does brush the underside of my ring finger but doesnt snag. May not be the best for my hand but thats just what im used to
my tension tend to be super tight too i have to remind myself to loosen up alot of times.

I only use my index finger.
It moves with the stitches to do the tension.

Ok. Well, I never thought I held my yarn oddly, but so far, I’m the only one who holds it my way. Interesting.

she’s probably saying she doesn’t use tension, which i did for almost a year
(it works for sc, but once i started making wearables it was SO slow.)
