Identifying AI Crochet and other crafts

Hey guys! As you may know, with the wave of AI, AI crocheted items are becoming common. I’m here to help people who may not be able to identify AI identify it! Here are my basic things to do.

  1. Look Closely
Look VERY closely at the stitches. Do they look off? Do the rows have ridges that they shouldn’t? Do you see magic circles missing or in places they shouldn’t be? These are almost a guaranteed way to find AI. AI, being a robot, doesn’t have knowledge of stitches. So, if the stitches look off, they probably are!

  2. Does it look airbrushed?
Does the photo look like a mix of 3D and real life? Is there this weird light that looks airbrushed on it? Does it look too perfect for a photo? If so, then it’s AI!

  3. Is it rainbow?
While it isn’t a dead giveaway, AI does tend to make the crochet it generates rainbow. This can help if you aren’t sure!

  4. Do the shapes look too perfect?
Have you seen an image of something crocheted and it looks perfect? Like, way too perfect, even for someone who’s crocheted for years? It might be AI!

  5. Is there only one image?
If there is only one image and it has the characteristics above, it’s probably AI. To make sure, ask the original poster for another image. If they decline or it looks different, they used AI!

  6. Is there humans, and are they wonky looking?
Simple enough. Weird faces, hands, or legs.
    Here are some images:

    Are they AI?

There has been an influx of videos of YouTube of “crochet patterns” that use AI thumbnails. These people are using people who may not understand AI or can’t identify it to grow their channel (and maybe make money). Also, there have been reports of people selling patterns using AI images, so it can be a scam. It’s important to raise awareness!

A lot of AI crochet has those weird rope rows, or if it’s crocheted flowered, some of them are marzipan-looking flowers.
And it also has a tendency to fade into a solid surface… like this rainbow bathroom

There’s also a lot of pattetn scams going on. People say there’s a pattern for an AI generated amigurumi, someone buys it and doesn’t receive any pattern. It’s good that the knowledge is soreading so that less people get scammed.

Also very weirdly uneven stitches and messed up rows.

Great points! I would also add, check for pictures of the amigurumi in multiple angles. This is something that AI can’t handle very well yet. A lot of people are getting scammed right now so it’s great that this information gets out there.

If you are trying to figure out if it’s AI, skip this reply.
If you’re sure, keeping reading

Answer and reasons for the cow

The cow is AI!

On the nose and in other areas, there is a lack of the magic circle. While some amigurumi doesn’t need the magic circle, and instead chains and then adds stitches on both sides, for the shape of the cow, it NEEDS a magic circle.
The environment is very whimsical, which can also help identify AI.
The flowers look wonky, and don’t have a proper magic circle (the AI tried to make one but failed)
On top of that, it looks 3D and real, meaning it’s AI!

Oh fantastic post Spot on.

If unsure do a reverse Google image or Google lens search and you can see.

I have been crochet for over 50yrs and these ones with "granny crocheted this… ", is a dead giveaway. No granny is going to crochet a motorcycle cover, GUARANTEED!

No no, it’s fine! It’s always important to add ways to identify AI so people who don’t know what AI is or can’t identify AI don’t get scammed by fake patterns!

One time, just for fun, I had AI generate me a pattern. It didn’t work, and I think I got super confused at the beginning of the cone portion. It was supposed to make a witch hat…
