im curious; do you think in pictures or words?

howdy, beans of ribblr!
so, i went down a rabbit hole, and found out that some people think in only pictures or feelings, and some people only think in words! so, how do you think?

  • pictures/feelings
  • words
  • a mix of both (so you can imagine things in your head, but you also have a voice in your head)

also, feel free to drop questions for people who think a different way! i have some questions :3

people who think in just pictures/feelings
-can you get songs stuck in your head?
-what is listening to music like?
-how do conversations work?
-are your dreams silent?

people who think in just words
-do you find reading books boring since you can’t imagine it?
-how do memories work?
-do you dream? what are your dreams like?

side note! i learned that having a ā€œdominantā€ side of your brain is a myth! isnt that neat :3

-can you get songs stuck in your head?
100%! usually its images from them or dancey things i do with them etc, or places i was when listening to them! (right now its The Alchemy looping over an image of me dancing on my moonlight balcony with a beach view which was just a bit ago it was awesome)
im a super musical person but also very visual, and its easy for photo/sound association to take over

-what is listening to music like?
its an entire experience. i like internalize the music sm and its makes me feel a lot deep down. i am one to soeak to the power of music because it has no description to me. there are certain songs that can make me visualize things that have neverrr happened, or songs that will trigger me crying or make any moment seem magical. like a filter. songs filter the images in my head! like social media filters but more raw and full of emotions!

-how do conversations work?
i have a hard time shutting up! and i find myself latching onto a thing and just going. like a small offhand thing such as an alligator robbing a jimmy johns (dont ask-) and then just rolling with it, creating scenarios and images etcetc. its easy to get lost in my own heads and daydreams, i think thats why i like writing, it helps channel my daydreams down a stream and use them for something!

-are your dreams silent?
no. they are veryyy loud. as aforementioned, im a musical person, so if i fall asleep with music itll get into my dreams like leaks in a roof. its suler weird.

un-mentioned and un-asked for, but thought i’d bring it up cause its associated. i dont know what it is, but theres people rolling arounf in my head like loose marbles. i can hear them ok-ish but the thing that im talking about cause it relates to your question is visuals. when they show io to talk its so hard to see them, but any other time i can see them so clearly, every shape and detail, every little bit. its suoer strange in terms of the rest of my brain so :nail_care::sparkles:

hope these all answer ur questions

okay this is such a cool post. So I only think in words, like i can barelyyy visualize things, and most of the time I’m just remembering it. I can sorta imagine how things are supposed to look like but I can’t actually see them :skull:
So I loveeee reading books, and some scenes are kinda frustrating cuz I’m like ā€œOkay I have no idea how this is supposed to look, what’s going onā€ But most of them I can kindddda see what’s going on, but It’s more like I’m remembering a place that looked kinda like that and manipulating it to match.
Memories are weird, it’s like I’ll sorta have one still image in my head, but anything that happened is just a description. And, this is pretty weird, I can’t visualize faces, even people I’ve known for years, so If I need to visualize what they look like I need a picture :joy:
I do dream, and as far as I’m aware, that’s basically the only time I see anything in my mind. But when I wake up (if I remember them obviously) I can only see them like they were memories: weird and blurry snapshots with a description of what happened. And just like memories, the audio is wayyyy stronger. Ig because i think in words :sparkles:

So when I read a book it’s like a movie in my head, but I also just think words sometimes (kinda like a narrative)

HI I mostly think in words tho sometimes I see black and white pictures but that doesn’t happen often. Books are still very interesting too me. Memories are always just people talking and noises and I still remember what happened. I do dream . In my dreams it’s kinda the same as memories like I know I’m moving but in my dreams that Is when I mostly see black and white pictures.

Sometimes when I’m really tired my thoughts will start being either in latin or Spanish :sob:? (I’m not fluent in either + I’ve never learned Latin?)

When i listen to music and read books I like to imagine everything. Maybe I do just pictures and feelings…

I read out words in my head and I’m doing that now as I type I also instead of saying the letters of abbreviations I say the words or I spell them like LOL I read that like lol so it’s like a word not letters I also just think about why words are structured like they are and what the words mean. I also picture photos in my mind if I want to imagine something or someone. When I read I picture the characters and what face expressions they might be making or who they’re looking at. So this is what I think and picture in my mind.

I think in words, but I can visualize things fairly well. Also, does anyone else imagine things or dream in black and white. I’m not color-blind or anything.
