hi sofieee <3 omg yay that’s so exciting!! i’ve done a couple markets before and honestly the biggest things i learned were: keep your table easy to look at (not too crowded), bring a variety but don’t overwhelm yourself, and have some change/cash ready for ppl who don’t use cards. also—some people like to chat and some don’t, so if just say hi there and hows your day and If they respond (and if you want) you can talk more! you can never say thank you enough. another thing is to make free coupons if some spends a certain amount of money. I have some made on Canva if you want me to send some let me know! if you have enough money to buy a small claw machine or already have one DEF use it. I can also send you a link to those. and little suprises/mysteries and sales are useful! good luck pookie <3
Talk to the people and be nice, cuz sometimes im not rlly social and/or too focused on my crochet so people dont buy. Also, id love to see your set up!!!
I use a fanny pack to hold my money. This way I am not fumbling with a cash box and the money is with me all the time. Definitely a lot of small items. Nice table cloth in a plain color (no pattern). Clear prices (signs or tags). Business cards. Bags to put purchased items in (I am trying to use more clear bags so that when someone has purchase something from you, they are advertising for you as they walk around the event )
I JUST had one yesterday, and all I can say is make a total of 30 items AT LEAST and make at least 8 items each
Here we go!!!
My biggest tip is to make a $5 bin of some sort. It’s great for kids, stocking stuffers, ect. I can’t count how many kids come up to my booth with a $5 bill looking for something!!!
Have as many payment options as possible. I take card (square is a lifesaver), cash, and Venmo. Always bring spare change (I usually bring a 20, two 10s, a few 5s, and a lot of 1s)
Bring tape!!! You’ll thank yourself later. I’ve used it for securing tablecloths, signs… Trust me you want it.
Have some way for people to contact you! I made business cards for free on Canva and printed them on cardstock. Literally took like no time at all.
Have a variety of things!! Stuff for kids, adults, teens. Plushies, bags, decor, ect. Put your most eye catching things up front, to draw people in. I definitely recommend having 1-2 big showstopper items! 9/10 times they don’t sell, but it shows people what you can do, and really draws people in.
Have someone with you (friend, family member…) at least some of the time. So you can eat, take bathroom breaks, even look around the event some. (Your bladder will thank you). It’s also a whole lot easier to set up a tent, tables, and merchandise with another person.
Be nice and welcoming!! Invite people in with “good morning/afternoon!”. Ask them how their day is going, if they have questions. Say you made all this yourself, ect. People love to get to know the seller!
Have a sheet to keep track of sales. I made mine in excel! Just basics, like what it was and what it sold for. Makes it a lot easier to calculate profit and how many items sold!!
Clear pricing/signage. I tag each item individually, unless there’s multiple (scrunchies, keychains, mystery boxes), then I use a sign. Nothings worse than having to ask what something costs! Make it clear. With small items you make lots of (for me it’s scrunchies), have a sale, like buy 3 get 1 free.
HAVE BAGS. I got like 500 plastic thank you bags off Amazon for like $10-$15. Cheap, and a great deal.
Have some display pieces! Baskets, crates, ect. I just took some from around my house, but Micheals, thrift stores, and Amazon are good places to look.
Make more stuff than you think you need!! I always bring everything I have. I never ever sell it all, but it’s good to restock as things sell. I’m my experience, there’s two types of crochet sellers. The bulk makers, and the normal makers. I’m the second one!! Instead of making 20 things and 5-10 of each thing, I make whenever I want/what I think will sell, and just sell that. It’s not as boring or stressful, and everyone can find something that interests them.
Make sure to have a tablecloth! They make things look neater. I also recommend a mock set up, so everything is easy the day of.
Whew! Sorry for the essay. Hope this helps!
I need to bookmark this page now lol
Bring some of your own patterns, because you could meet other crocheters/knitters and you could sell them the patterns
This is amazing, this is perfect for peopel who need help with markets. You did great writing this up, i agree with this so much!
Awe thanks!
omg so helpful, im writing this down lol
Hey! I have a post which outlines some of my advice for markets!
Hope this helps!
Ok so I just realized that I linked a comment but it’s on the post
I had my first a little bit ago and I made maybe 35 things and I COMPLTELY SOLD OUT. so defiantly make more than I did and also what I did is if space allows, have more than one table + get a cloth tablecloth that wont be translucent
Hi! I just had my first public market recently, and one thing that I have definitely noticed is that people LOVE axolotls. They were for sure my best seller. Loaf cats also sell really well.
Also @brayslay could you link those little claw machines and maybe send the coupons? Those sound REALLY cool!
Wow! Thank you SO so much for all the tips! I have my first ever market coming up and this sass so helpful! Feel free to dm me with any others hehe
I’m debating making a topic about it! You think that’s a good idea?
Definitely!
yes of course!
