I can’t lie, painting is probably one of my least favorite things to do
But I have a lot of canvases, so I’ve got to use them one way or another.
So I figure: why not pastels?
I’m using acrylic as my base because I want a nice even background, and I’ll be going over the subject with pastels
I’ll come back with an update (if I remember)
Here’s how it’s looking after I applied the background color
If this turns out well, I’m for sure gonna make more silly pieces and slap them on my wall
Oh btw note for anyone doing this themselves:
You must start with the acrylic paint, use the pastels to correct your overdrawn lines.
Acrylic paint will not dry correctly on top of oily mediums. It’s why when you do oil paint you can under paint using acrylic.

tips
-
make a general sketch with whatever color you want as your background color (I used a purple pencil), and refine with black or some other dark color. It seems odd, but the great thing about it is that your super messy blocking in phase will be basically erased when you put your first sheer layer of paint
-
your layers of acrylic paint need to be super sheer. Go over your subject only about once with your background color
-
finish your background color before you work on the rest of your drawing. Depending on what colors you use, some will or won’t appear over the background color. So you can be kinda messy with it and it wind be noticeable
-
since acrylic doesn’t dry correctly over pastels, try and work as neat as you can with your pastels. If you do make any mistakes you can just use a blunt needle or a card to scratch it off
-
if you want super well blended colors, you can use your finger or a q-tip dipped in olive oil to blend
-
depending on the color you’re using, you will want to go over the subject area with that same color in acrylic. If I had gone over the purple without a base color, the yellow wouldn’t have popped nearly as much
-
if you’re gonna use any white paint at all, use this brand (if available in your area) because it’s super opaque for white paint and it dries matte. It’s a great super cheap primer
It single-handedly made my cheap yellow paint actually useable -
any brand of pastels should work, I used the Pentel Arts 36 pk, but cray-pas or grumbacher oil pastels should work fine too.
-
though I’m pretty comfortable with pastels, if you’re not too confident In your skills, you can always do a layer of crayon to just get a hang of where you want your colors to be.
It can also help you get more defined lines too.
