I have been playing guitar for about a year now but I still need help with barr chords. I am awful at them. Does anyone have any advice on how to play them?? I need help

I’ve been playing for four years, and I find if you focus more on pressing sort of the middle strings, you’re more likely to get a good sound. And if you have a capo, you could use that to make the strings less tense to practice the correct form and stuff! And try not to focus your mind on like squeezing the neck of the guitar or squeezing the strings( I’ve totally never done that definitely…) . Try to focus more on pressing evenly across all the strings, cause if you can kind of just grab it and try to apply a lot of muscle (which once again ive definitely totally most certainly not done
) you’re more likely to just have a lot of stress and not really be applying it. I like to think more of pulling my entire arm back to press, rather than just pressing at the strings between my thumb and finger. Also just practiced it for a few minutes and then take a break so you don’t get hurt or start raging at how hard barr chords are. Hope this helps!

If you really want make sure you can bar them with one finger, I’d say work on the strength it takes. It can be hard to get all 6 strings down! I used my first two fingers when I was starting, to make sure I could barely, and just play around down the fretboard that way. It will hurt on a steel string guitar, it just takes time to get used to. ALSO, an alternative is using a Capo. I would say you should still learn your bar chords, but q capo is fun to play around with too, if you’re trying to learn to play higher on your fretboard.

I have played guitar for maybe 3-4 years now and I know what barres are!
They can be difficult, but my three biggest tips are:
1: Don’t push yourself too hard! I did this bc I had a deadline for learning to play a piece, and hurt my wrist badly!
2: Start with easier barres that arent full. For exmaple, B minor and B are barres that only require pushing down on 5 strings.
3: My teacher always told me to put on the capo on the 2nd to 3rd fret when I was learning new barres and practice them down there! That way, the frets are closer together and its just less strain on your hand overall! Then, when you get used to playing them down lower it wont be as hard when you switch back to normal!
Also dont push yourself too hard, youve got this!
