Questions for Those with Etsy Shops

Hello everyone! As of late, I have been considering opening an etsy shop to sell commissions (both crochet and a couple other things) and I was wondering if it was worth it? I know that the fees can be quite high and how that’s a big turn off for somw folks. So if you have an etsy shop, is it worth it? If you’re comfortable with sharing, about how many sales have you made? I hope that you all have a lovely day!

lets put it this way… I’ve had my etsy shop going for about a year now and only made 1 sale. and that was because my best friend bought something… then It sold for £12 but after all the fees i got less than £3 in my pocket out of it… plus there’s the fees you have to pay (i think every month or 3 months or something like that i don’t remember) to keep each listing active. I’ve honestly kind of just forgotten about my etsy shop at this point because it just isn’t worth it for me. I know that not everyone’s experience selling on etsy is like this, but that’s been my experience with it. do with that information what you will.

thanks for the insight, i knew the fees could really take a hit from your profit, but gracious i didn’t think it was that much

I didn’t think it was that much either. But yeah after etsy taking it’s fees, then paying for the shipping label I only got like 1/4 of the money

perhaps it’s not as worth it as i first thought

For reference… Someone sold like a $250 item and lost money on it… Because their customer had clicked an ad days before, and the sale was within 30 days of that, it was still considered to be a sale because of the ad so etsy took extra fees, then the shipping charges, the credit card fees, and then materials costs… Everything added up and they lost in the end. Ever since hearing that, I won’t bother, even with just patterns. The listing fees are too high that I would need to charge more. Plus everyone I have talked to is getting fed up with etsy and leaving because they’re promoting AI patterns and AI items rather than real creators.

i use etsy fairly regularly and noticed all of the ai, which is quite annoying as I’m trying to support real artists. having that insight with such a large purchase though, i definitely think it’s best if i don’t open a shop with them

I have been on Etsy for a year or more now and I can say that it is worth it if you put the time and effort in to it. I do not have a lot up in my shop right now. So, I do not make a lot of sales, but I do know (and have talked to others that do etsy) that if you put the effort and time into putting a lot of stuff on there it can worth it.

I make about 1-2+ sales every month, but I do not have a lot on there.

I don’t have experience selling physical items, but patterns are nice because it’s a one and done.

Etsy charges a ton of tack on prices. Try ko-fi. You get more from your sells. You just gotta traffic your account yourself.

ah I’ll look into it!!

Oh did i mention ko-fi is free up to 5 items? You can sell more if you pay the monthly memberships. But 5 free aint half bad. And you can get people to support by donating. You get 100% of that. They take none from you.
