Just a random chat about yarn, whats good, whats bad, where to find yarn , great sales ect. If your selling/donating yarn let us know here too!
I’ve personally been on the hunt for cheap yarn ;-; low funds and a yarn addiction are not a good combo
I love talking about
I have just packed up my stash… it was a 3-week adventure bc I never organized it, I just kept buying more and randomly using it.
I started by separating it into “animal” “mineral” and “vegetable” - meaning, if it had any animal content at all (wool, alpaca, etc) then it went into that bag. Then, if the yarn had any synthetic fiber - ie. Acrylic, nylon, polyester, etc. (but no animal) - it went into the “mineral” bag. What was left was either “vegetable” - ie. 100% cotton, bamboo, linen, etc. or “mystery” yarn.
Then I split up the bags into “new & labeled” or “used”.
I could see what I bought and never used, and what I had the most of.
I filled 6 large size space bags, and 3 smaller ones.
I think when I get moved and unpack, I will make a stash buster project. Maybe a scrapghan?
Tell me about your favorite/worst yarn - what do you hoard?
Wow, that’s so cool! I’ll do it!
I dont buy yarn from big brands like bernat but I buy some for a good price from stores or ebay and sometimes charity shops
Before it went out of biz I bought good yarn from Tuesday Morning, usually 80% off retail. One year for my birthday, my daughter drove around to every Tuesday Morning around Houston and bought all the of a certain type and gave them to me in a big tote!
I made 4 afghans and still have 1/2 of them left 8 years later!
My favorite yarns (cause you can never have just one) red heart acrylic ive been using that since i was little , bernat blanket yarn, and lily sugar and cream.
Worst yarns, the chenille from the dollar store, any sort of textured yarms
Also does the area yall live in affect the yarn yall find alot or a little? I currently live in Hawaii and the yarn selection so far has been slim , im limited to the one craft store with a poor selection of acrylic (mostly just primary colors) and walmart.
I used to live in Cali and TX in the past and i was able to find plenty of yarn in mainland states. In cali i was a 3 minute drive from a Michaels, and in TX there were like 2 Hobby lobbys i visited alot growing up.
I was in TX for almost 10 yrs, but I grew up in AK - I know what you mean about local resources being limited.
I have taken the leap and ordered from ice yarns and Temu, and I have been pleased.
If you like plush yarn, hobbii is on my list for having good options to try.
I made a bear from dollar tree chenille and I wrote the pattern on my telegram channel. I have it unpub on Ribblr too. I am looking for a good alternative chenille since the dollar tree is so random.
Ive been looking at Hobbii yarn sinve i saw some of my favorite creators use them and was interested in it i just havent had the funds to make an order, which yarns om there do you recomend.
I haven’t ordered from hobbii yet, only bc I am packing up my house for a move.
When I made my bear, I honestly didn’t realize that the chenille from dollar tree was only available in the stores.
Once I went back to get more, I figured it out.
I have been trying to find a good sub for the carmel color, and mostly striking out. Hobbii has one that’s currently sold out. I’m on an email alert for when it’s back in stock, and I plan to order it and make another bear.
hoping it works so I can sub it into my pattern!
Honey Bunny has several different options and great reviews, but the colors aren’t quite right for this project, so I’m starting with Baby Snuggle Solid. Toucan also looks promising though!
