g’day mates :> what are some songs you’ve had on repeat/are stuck in your head/just been really into recently and why?
here are six of mine !!
radiohead - jigsaw falling into place
similarly to in rainbows itself, this song is a masterpiece from start to finish. the other day i was listening to that big emotional crescendo at the end of the song and started ascending, made a huge hole in my roof and ceiling. planning to sue thom yorke for personal and property damages
weezer - the world has turned and left me here
this song is pretty nostalgic for me, so maybe i’m just looking at it (or listening, rather) through rose colored lenses, but i think this is one of weezer’s best songs. the lead acoustic paired with that heavy rhythm guitar (a blue album staple) just sounds heavenly. the lyrics are personal and also relatable, which we kind of don’t get anymore from green album and onwards.
speaking of, when it comes to weezer’s newer stuff i can’t help but miss the blue album/pinkerton era. i know that weezer is a pop rock band and kind of always has been, but i love the heavier sound of their first two albums. i also miss the experimentation. one of my main gripes with maladroit (ik it’s not really new but wtv) in particular is that the songs blend together. imo the most recent album they’ve made that capture some of that creativity is red album (quite underrated imo), but it’s definitely more pop-rock than alt-rock.
foo fighters - everlong
one of my favorite songs of all time. the guitar is perfect, upbeat yet melancholy, and since it’s foo fighters i also love the drums. it’s quite reminiscent of like… a late night drive with friends. it invokes this kind of nostalgia, even though i wasn’t alive for the song’s creation.
stone temple pilots - interstate love song
similarly to everlong, i also get a sense of nostalgia listening to this song. perhaps it’s because it was the first stp song i ever heard. i think it has both emotional and physical healing properties. i love it dearly
the strokes - the adults are talking
tbh i’ve never been a huge strokes fan, but this song makes me feel inclined to check out some of their newer stuff. it sounds much more polished than is this it, for example, while still retaining a somewhat similar style. something about the guitar and vocals reminded me a lot of radiohead, in rainbows in particular, which i quite liked. it’s also pretty catchy and got stuck in my head for a while lol
pavement - date with ikea
i am never going to stop yapping about pavement. the vocals are some of stephen malkmus’s best work imo. i love the super crunchy guitar paired with the clean guitar lead. love the solo. overall a good listening experience
comparing this song and brighten the corners as a whole to their first album slanted and enchanted shows a whole world of difference which i kind of love. i love how through their music i can see them figuring out how to make it. but unlike weezer the songs are all still super unique. date with ikea stands out in particular, as it’s more upbeat than most of their songs, and also uses what i think is called telephone effect on the vocals (though hit the plane down uses that too).
uh i did not intend to yap that much. anyways, stay hydrated
