I didn’t know how long it was but I woke up to the dog licking my face. As I woke up, the dog stood over me, protecting me. I was fully conscious when the dog walked over to me and put both his paws on my chest.

“Never ever disobey me again,” he said.

He got off and as he turned, I saw the damage that Ao Yin had done to him.

“Let me bandage that up, …” I said, realizing I didn’t know his name.

“Chase, and I’ll be fine. Do you even have any bandages?” And he started laughing for the first time I met him.

“Are you sure? You’re bleeding very profusely!”

“Yes, I’ll be fine. We can never die in this swamp. The only way we can die is if we get eaten by Ao Yin.”

He looked off into the distance, indicating the conversation was over. I looked around and stood up to get a feel for my new surroundings. Beside me there was a pretty blue house that definitely looked like it didn’t belong in the swamp. Still, it looked welcoming enough. There was white trim and a cute windvane of a little girl carrying a basket. And there were white flower boxes on the window with cute little pink flowers painted on them. Just as I looked at the door, an elderly lady walked out and waved to me. She put her pointer finger in front of her mouth in a ‘ssh’ gesture and pointed to Chase. Then she waved for me to come into the house. I felt bad leaving Chase out here with the horrible bull-like creature in the swamp, but surely he’ll be ok.

I opened the little gate connected to a fence that was surrounding the house and immediately felt at ease. Certainly, this was where I was supposed to be. As I walked closer to the old woman, I felt more and more sure. I even got a little sleepy!

In a hushed voice she told me, “Come in, come in! We have warm food inside for you and a soft bed.”

And I was ushered inside the house. The entry room was grand with two staircases on either side of the room, there was a nice red and white carpet in the middle of the room and a glowing chandelier hanging from the high ceiling. There was a door on the far end of the room and the lady pointed to it and said, “In there, is the cafeteria, get in line with the other children and you’ll receive your food.”

I joyfully trotted towards it feeling ever more grateful I found this place.

The line was not long and the food smelled delicious. When I got to the lunch lady, she asked me what I wanted. I got to choose?!

“Wow, everything looks so delicious. Can I have one of everything?”

“Of course.” she responded. And she filled up my tray with turkey, hor’d’oerves, mac and cheese, tomato soup, chili, roast, and so many other delicacies I can’t name. I took a seat at the nearest table to me. I couldn’t wait to eat all this food! As I ate it, I felt a growing urge to walk in a circle. It was so unexplainable, but I didn’t think to ask questions, after all there was nowhere else I was supposed to be! It was here, I was sure.

I got up and left my tray, I didn’t know what else to do with it and left the cafeteria.

The urge to walk was so strong now that I couldn’t control my legs. They were shaking so hard, eager to walk. I saw other kids walking in one direction so I walked too. There was nothing to talk about since I could tell we all had one common goal, to walk. Plus there was nothing to tell these other children. So, I walked.

As I walked, I noticed a pattern. This made me happy, especially because I wanted to walk in a circle. It was, great room, staircase up, balcony, staircase up, attic, staircase down, balcony, staircase down, great room.
Also I could feel as I walked, my brain melting? Idk how to explain it but, with nothing to think about or mentally process, it just melted. And I thought of nothing, nothing at all. I didn’t even notice when I tripped over dead bodies on the staircase. I didn’t even notice when what looked like flying tigers snatched the dead bodies from the staircases.
And when I didn’t want to walk anymore, I would just go to the cafeteria and sit cause there was nothing else to do. Then I would start to think again, but always when that happened a lunch lady would give me food and I would eat. And I would have that sudden urge to walk again. After a while, this same routine made me feel dreary. There was no point, no use to think anymore. Why should I? I need to walk.

ur welcome for the short one! muahahahahahhahha… :smiling_face_with_horns:
