Hey guys, I know this topic is not craft related, but I think that since so many of you are animal lovers, you might be able to provide me some advice. Basically, I live in the country, and stray cats tend to show up at my house who likely came from my shady neighbors next door. Usually they look fine and unharmed, but a few weeks ago we started seeing this one that was a mix of orange, black, gray, and white, basically the mutt of shorthair cats. Anyway, it was fine up until it disappeared for about a week. Then, it showed up on our porch yesterday badly injured. We couldnt tell quite what happened to its eye because it left when it saw us as usual, but its eye was all bloodied and blackened. I really want to help it, but my dad is.. should I say “Anti-cats”? He doesnt want anything to do with them, and he doesnt want to let it in ever. But at the very least I want to get it to a vet because I just know that its suffering out there. Im not sure if I already mentioned this, but short haired cats are literally bred to be indoor cats, which is why its bad that there are so many strays. People say, oh lets keep it as an outdoor cat, it will eat all of the mice! (My dad) but the problem is that these cats arent adapted to this kind of environment, and it is very dangerous for them. My mom wants to help it too, but we just don’t know what we can do. For all we know its feral. And we don’t want to trap it because then it could get attacked by other wildlife out here. (Yes, we have aggressive raccoons) We also cant feed it by my dad’s orders.
Anyway, although I could ramble on for hours, the main point of this post is that I need ideas on things I can do to help this cat. I know this sounds harsh but the way its looking right now, this cat isn’t going to survive, and if by some miracle it does, its going to be in pain. I just want to find it a home and give it a better life than the one it has. Thanks for reading if you made it this far.
If i were you i would try and at least take it to the vet and see if they could do anything for it.
Or usually if you take the cat to an animal shelter they will usually take care of the cat (give him shots, neuter/spay them, and take them to the vet) once it is given to them.
I understand what youre saying about ur dad being anti cat tho lol.
My dad is the exact same way and we have two cats and he absolutely HATES them.
Were trying to put them in better homes rn but its hard bc they are my only pet.
We also used to have strays and maybe you could lure it into a cage or your house somehow.
Or just try to gain its trust.
My dad also said not to feed them but in the end i just had too and i feel rlly bad about disobeying him but i had to.
Yeah, I get what you mean. I just need to find out how we can get them in a cage without placing and overnight trap. Maybe I do just need to gain its trust, but I dont see it often enough for it to not take a long time. If I trap it overnight it would probably get in a fight with the raccoons. In fact that could even be how it lost its eye.
Yes we had strays and my brother (being the tenderhearted person he is) tried so hard to trap it in a cage with bait (like food and treats) but we never caught one bc they were too fast.
What made it harder was they were kittens and they could barely eat dry food and they were so thin so thats why i just HAD to feed them.
Also we live by a VERY busy road so most animals outside sadly get run over.
Also i will say it is VERY hard to earn a feral cats trust.
See if there’s any animal rescue organizations somewhat near you and give them a call. They probably know what to do. I wouldn’t go around trying to capture the cat myself in case it turns violent and hurts you (I know one indoor cat who is super sweet but immediately turns super violent the moment you try to put her into a carrier)
You should definitely take the cat to the vet.
You could probably use a live trap to trap it. If your dad won’t let you help the cat you could bring it to a humane society. Mine allows other people to foster cats until they are ready to find homes.
Call the vet. They could probably trap it for you and care for it. Do not let it in your house. They will adapt and find mice or something to eat. If you feed them, they will become dependant on you. With it being feral there is not much else you can, or should do.
This seem like the because they know how to handle it and they can probably tranquillize it so it doesn’t attack.
def bring it to a shelter or call animal control
We recently have kittens in our garage and they where feral there really sweet now and we used a gofer trap to catch them you do need to put treats or food in there tho
I almost cried reading that bc I love cats and lost mine just this Easter .
If I were you I would take him to an animal shelter/rescue centre, where he will get the care he needs and deserves. Or to the vet. Maybe try feeding him without your dad knowing to gain it’s trust.
I would definitely say call animal control, they can take care of all the veterinary care it needs and can find it a loving home
Have your mom post a found cat or need help posts on her social medias. Hopefully someone would reach out and want to help.
