Does the photo look blurry? Can you tell if the stitches are real? If seen in a tester call, ask for more photos!

Look at the safety eyes AI has trouble with shadows and light reflections and look at the pattern does it have unnecessary explanations

  • Definitely look at the stitches, they won’t be perfect all the time or they just don’t line up
  • Then there are like the other things in the pictures for example you may see knitting needles in a crochet pattern or a crochet hook that isn’t quite right.
  • Also for clothing crochet pattern there might be multiple pictures, often they don’t look EXACTLY the same if you just look close enough.

One-color, perfectly lit, but there are no/weird shadows in the background? A big giveaway that something fishy might be going on.

Consider if the things depicted are actually possible or not, too!

Here’s an example of a pattern that used AI, at least for the background (but probably more):

Rainbow yarn that perfectly blends into a rainbow. Although it would be awesome if that was how it worked irl :joy:

I look at the crochet lines to see if the stitches are clean or if they’re blurry or fuzzy.

A good way to tell is if theres multiple photos of the same image look for any inconsistencies in the stitching. Similiarly, look at the backround of the photo, generally if the angle and lighting is too perfect then its ai. Follow your gut too, if you think its ai then it probably is. Thats what I always do :)

This is the most mature most accurate advice. Yes this.

look at the background. especially if it has other objects. sometimes it generates a pen instead of a crochet hook!

Make sure you have some mature voices in TAIP. Some that have been crocheting for more than a hot minute and have seen unique unfamiliar stitches. Not an insult if it comes off that way. It is truly not meant that way. My family says my suggestions can come off wrong sometimes so please know that I mean it with with good intentions and with kindness and all sincerity so that people who are incredibly good in the art don’t get flagged. Some people will get reported because theit stitches are so even and tight and their work is so good it looks ai but it is totally human done. Just done by a perfectionist skilled in this craft.

I won’t ever be flagged as AI but I do know some artist that would, because their work is so good.

Do you think you could make it? Is there shadows?

Weird blurry image, impossible stitches, unlikely proportions… and if you’re a regular you can join The Association for Identification of AI Patterns!

That is such a valid concern, and we make sure there are a lot of people checking and researching before someone flags! Thank you, and it didn’t come off the wrong way at all

Oh phew. I do worry about things coming off wrong. I am glad. I have read in the general chat you guys talking about certain patterns and it does seem like you are all trying to be responsible which is very good. I would join but…..you seem on top on things. I will just chime in here and there.

If you ever see two colors fade into each other unnaturally, that’s usually AI!

It might look TOO perfect. I know many people are amazing at crocheting, but TOO perfect is just off.

The lighting might be too good.

Irregular stitches or stitches that just don’t exist.

If it’s missing a leg, has an extra leg, extra ear…etc.

So if you see a picture that has any of these, it’s probably Ai! :)

Ooh I’m not in the gen chat lol… I hear wild stories there. I heartily recommend the lounge chat if you’re a regular because we are pretty calm with a smidgeon of crazy ;)

Look for increases! If there are none visible, it might be ai.

almost too perfect and has weird stitch combos with an almost too real feel to it.

The stitches may look really smooth and there isn’t a lot of definition. If there are hands, they sometimes have 6 fingers.

That i can tell, usually with an image somethings funny about, it’s too smooth or could literally look impossible. With words be careful of sentence structure, because a non English speaker will be different than Ai, it will make something up and it’ll be gibberish that doesn’t make a lick of sense whereas with a person you’ll notice it’s just grammar usually.
