  • Unrealistic sizes
  • The direction of the stitches can be a really important one!
  • The yarn is too smooth/doesn’t have fuzzies
  • Unrealistic sizes :up_arrow:
  • I have seen Etsy listings where the item
    • Looked too perfect
    • Was only taken ‘photos’ of from one side
    • The different pictures showed different proportions with the background
  • The stitches around the eyes are usually messed up (the directions of the stitches again)
  • Extra/weird body parts

BTW: Ribblr you are doing a great job with preventing AI patterns to be listed; I haven’t spotted any the time I have been here!

So sad AI is getting better… But always when they say: ‘AI is going to take over our jobs’ I’m like, PLS place these sinker eyes then!

I look for things like no Mr, no apparent start in the stitches/ random stitch like squares, stitches that don’t look right, missing an arm/leg or an extra one, and AI backgrounds changes are the pie pattern pic shouldn’t be taken with a woman and Santa in the back! Stay safe from AI patterns, it SUCKS to be on the wrong side of paying for a pattern and having it be useless.

I’ve never had any problems with AI patterns so far, but if an amigurumi seems too perfect, I usually don’t even bother reading the pattern. However expert you are, there will always be some stitches that are different from the others.

It will either be too perfect of too bad

I think generally patterns use the right side of crochet, but yeah everyone crochets in their own way :)

Some red flags you might catch:

:triangular_flag: The stitches are unrealistic. There’s no chance you can crochet that, it doesn’t look like the basic stitches (sc, hdc, dc…) nor like the pretty ones (star stitch, jasmine stitch…).

:triangular_flag: When the stitches are unrealistic, they might not make sense. Like head starting from one side and ending by the other, no magic ring…

:triangular_flag: Other than that, if it’s a plushie, you can see a weird spark in their eyes, as if they were animated or just not real.

:triangular_flag: Always look at the photo to see, if the person holding/wearing the “crocheted item” doesn’t look unnormal. That usually involves one +/- finger, weird proportions…etc.

:triangular_flag: If you see a tester call with a picture that looks like AI, it’s the best to ask the person for a picture from another angle. AI can’t replicate the exact same picture and it’ll end up atleast a bit different from the original.

I hope these tips will help someone when identifying if a picture is AI-generated or no.

Usually AI patterns are spelled wrong and aren’t possible to make for example if you did sc inc around (47) then it was sc around (65) then it’s obviously AI and also the AI pictures usually look somewhat cartoony and unrealistic lighting and there is also probably going to be some like collar or horn or something that isn’t crotchet on the creation too

Missing appendages, stitches that do not look right, backgrounds that are too perfect.

Especially when dealing with patterns on Etsy, there are a lot of AI pet patterns. A big red flag is if the post for the pet pattern does not feature an actual animal! Another thing to consider is if you’ve ever seen a pattern for this specific thing and if that thing is even possible to make.

One thing that helps me is if the lighting looks off or weirdly perfect. And also if the stitches are all identical. I’m not saying some people don’t have perfect tension or anything, but just sometimes it just looks too perfect and paired with the lighting and maybe the background it just feels fake. If there are people or animals in the picture, usually the skin or the fur or whatever would look off, yk, either too flawless or the eyes look weird are too many fingers on one hand, little mistakes like that. Sometimes the color changing will look different too. AI might accidentally make it fade into the other color or something like that and it doesn’t work that way.

Also, it is +800 not 800+ and there are a few patterns repeating.

Some of the ai crochet have perfect shapes, and unreal shapes, as well as the background & lighting. ( but there are many good photographs of real crochet so it is getting harder ) make sure to check the reviews and likes, and try to buy from trusted crocheters.
