Scales can feel really boring but it’s the best way to build stamina and improve your range and buzz on your mouthpiece before playing to warm up

Always always ALWAYS warm up. ALWAYS. Pay attention to your embouchre, and, for the love of instruments, don’t drop it. Have good posture when playing, and I recommend moving your music stand to the side and tilting it so that your sound goes straight forward. Oh, and raise your bell, no matter how difficult it may be. You’ll thank me later.

  1. Use lots of air- practice breathing exercises to help build your stamina
  2. Practice! Even 10 minutes a day can help!
  3. Always warm up before- start with just the mouthpieces, then low notes, and then higher notes
  4. Keep your right fingers curved, like you’re making the letter C. This will help them press the valves quicker
  5. Have fun and don’t give up! It’ll be hard at first but if you’re determined, you can do really well!

I play trombone, but a really helpful way to warm up, is by doing “long tones” it’s basically we’re you hold two whole notes tied together for like 10 measures. They help with note quality, and holding your air, so you can go longer with out breathing. Although they are time consuming, they are really helpful!

80% AIR SUPPORT 20% OMBROCHURE CONTROL!!! I play trumpet for my school jazz band so if it’s in a jazz setting, take it to 90-10. Low notes should be loose but never sacrificing air support. If you’ve never played a wind instrument before, at the beginning of your practice, focus on breathing exercises such as breathing in to your full lung capacity for 5 second and then without breathing out, sip in 15 times. This will stretch your lungs and teach you to work up your breaths for long runs. I suggest doing that while standing up. If you ever have any questions, feel free to reach out. Trumpet is a tricky instrument when it comes to tone quality so practice making yourself sound smooth vs separated. Different pieces call for different styles. <3
