What are the purple icons?

Everyone has a variety of purple icons by their pictures. Mine is a grad cap. I’ve seen cowboy hats, witch hats and more.
What are they for? Can we change them?

if you hover over it (on computer) yours means you are a member, mine means I’m a regular
