What Size Crochet Hook?

Hello everyone. I’m about to start a new project soon and need some help choosing a hook size. I want to make some small patches for this project by crocheting them out of embroidery floss as buying custom patches is too expensive for me. I tried a couple rows with my 2mm (my smallest hook) but the gaps were too large for my liking. what size would you recommend i use? Do you have any advice for crocheting with such small materials? Hope you have a lovely day :sparkling_heart:

maybe you could buy a 1mm? i’ve never crocheted that small so I’m not quite sure

usually you use 0.5-0.7 i think

I use a 1.25 when I’m micro crocheting, I have a 1mm but it seems like the embroidery floss might fall off the hook (at least in my opinion)

Edit i think i read what you meant wrong…… lol

You wanna just make patches not color patches on a item… oof

I was gonna say you could try cross stitching it on depending on how you want it to look?

I cross stitched the eyebrows and chest coloring on my doggo

the patches are sorta detailed, so i feel i coyld do better crocheting (as i have little to no experience with embroidery or cross stitch). i appreciate the suggestion though (and your examples look lovely).

edit: i saw your edit now lol. no worries about it

I use 1.00mm with my embroidery thread when microcrocheting. I also use the yarn under/ yarn over method. If you have tight tension, the gaps are non-existent.

1.7 mmhook works great with embroidery floss for me. I’ve made earrings with it and it looks good :+1:

Xd i blame tiredness.. i would say you could take a leap into cross stitch its fun

I made my hoodie a pile of patches cause it had so many little pin holes from nails…

My very favorite patch yet.. i had so much trouble with the shape…

But understandable if you wanna stay with what you know… i tried crocheteting with thread and decided it was not for me.. i still do but ya i have trouble figuring out the size of hook to use too

perhaps i could have my mom teach me. I’ll have to see how successful i am with crocheting them first lol

I tried crocheting with embroidery floss and a 2.00mm hook worked fine for me, maybe because I have a pretty tight tension. If you feel like you need to go a lot smaller, maybe a 1mm or even smaller would work. If you feel like you don’t need to size down that much, maybe try out a 1,50mm or 1,75mm hook. I hope you can find just the right hook!

Good luck then!

I believe a 1 mm should work out ok if you find your tension to loose with a 2mm. I reccomend buying a set with a few different smaller size so you can fiddle around testing different ones cause it really is tension and everyone’s is different.

Embroidery isn’t very hard to learn

And it turns out great

But if you still want to do the micro-crochet route then maybe use a 1mm or a .75

That’s understandable lol

Whatdesigns are you trying to crochet?

Edit: This is what a .75 and a 1mm hook look like next to my 2.5mm hook

I’m trying to recreate this cardigan. I wanted to do the patches as well

I’d double up the embroidery thread then and continue using the 2mm since those seem to be a bit bigger

oh okay, I’ll try that (im mostly doing practice runs atm so i don’t waste the right colors lol)
