I’ve been wondering for awhile what music Christians can listen to. I never really payed attention to this until a friend brought it up. I know that on one end people say that Christians shouldn’t listen to anything remotely secular, but on the other end some people don’t care.
Personally, I listen to music for the beats and I kind of tune out the lyrics, if that makes sense. So, I’m a lot more loose with what music I allow myself to listen to. Although, I still try to avoid anything extremely explicit or that could lead to sin.
What’s your opinion on this?
God bless you

I mean … I don’t think songs can really LEAD to sin, so… It pretty much depends on the person’s comfort zone/preferences

Same here! I find that whenever I listen to a song with a lot of cussing in it, I end up cussing in my head much more frequently. So I try to avoid that as much as possible :)

I would say… in my opinion, I feel like- we shouldn’t be listening to music with lyrics that protray things that God doesn’ t like, and doesn’t approve of.

I think music can be very influential on someone, but that doesn’t mean you can only listen to just hymns.

Excellent question! It’s not a hard fast rule, unless of course you are parents raising small- grade school children. In that case, they do NOT need secular music shaping their little minds.
My journey with music has led me to a few conclusions: I’m a sensitive person and I tend to ruminate ( think in circles, think about the same thing over and over) and listening to secular music in general has led me down a path of depression and self pity. So, while there was a great deal of secular music I used to enjoy, I don’t enjoy it now. Some secular music doesn’t effect me much mostly because they carry good memories for me-for example The Beatles (not the later music), John Denver, and a sprinkling of others that make me think happy thoughts.
So, if you’re a sensitive person, have the gift of discernment/mercy, secular music isn’t going to sit well with you.
If you’re not sensitive, well, you’re not completely off the hook!
. Obvious music such as Back in Black, Iron Maiden, Poison, and heavy devil music, or music depicting witchcraft ( Taylor Swift/Beyonce) is out of the picture.
The question you should ask yourself is this “Does this music draw me closer to Jesus?” Be honest with yourself. If you still want to listen to it, be honest with God and ask Him to help you hear the music through His ears. If someone new in the Lord is still listening to secular music don’t judge them, they are taking baby steps. But eventually, you got to grow up.

Of course, not just the hymns although many of them are chock full of good theology.

my mom thinks as christians you shouldnt listen to anything non christian. me my dad and brother love christian rap and r&b but my mom HATES it hes more of a gospel person and stuff. i like kpop too but shes like no you shouldnt listen to that. Later on we watched a interview from this guy who said its okay to listen to music non Christian as long as its not taking over your faith. Maybe stay away from explicit songs but you are free to listen to whatever. he said as long as its not to wear you are singing it in church or anything its perfectly fine. And there’s plenty of Christian artists that have different music styles if you would rather listen to Christian music. A few of my favorites are Sam Rivera, Lecrae, KB, whatuprg. But yeah as long as its nothing extreme or it starts taking over your faith its perfectly fine

I’m not rly harsh/strict on myself abt that. I listen to Benson Boone, Noah Kahan, and Alex Warren and I would recommend them, tho some songs are very not biblical.
Usually if it mentions that ‘s’ word we don’t like to say, I will refrain from listening to it. And there are certain artists that I stay away from, namely:
Taylor Swift (her more recent songs)
Lady Gaga
Post Malone
Billie Eilish
Really, it just depends what ur boundaries are and how much you want to be exposed to! I hope this helps!

Just try and stay away from singers that you don’t feel like are bringing you closer to the lord!

another thing i want to say, i dont know if youre looking for this, just a refreshment from the usual christian music of today. my dad likes listening to bands such as kings kaleidoscope or rivers and robots, or there is a new artist called josh queen. his music sounds a lot like some more recent pop artists. i would recommend all of the above artists

Late to this topic, but this is what works for me and for my faith → I do not listen to music that either have bad lyrics (explicit and cussing (ofc)), things that go against my faith, or evokes bad feelings (rebellious, depressing, etc.), because those things would drive me away from God. Basically, if a song makes me uncomfortable inside listening to it, whether I like it or not, I won’t listen to it. I think that’s a good rule for anyone and anything: if it makes you uncomfortable, don’t do it. My parents think that any secular music should be avoided, but they don’t make me follow that (yet, at least). I also listen to christian/worship music and some hyms, ofc. There are many good artists out there who make good biblical music. Music is powerful, for good, and for bad. That’s why I listen to what I do!
Right now as I’m typing I’m listening to The Moss by Cosmo Sheldrake :] Just so u know what I usually listen to haha
Also, I didn’t recommend any christian artists because I am currently looking for them :p

Yes, there is a definite shift in her music from the old music as opposed to what she has been putting out lately.
