Hi, hope you don’t mind me sharing here. Or the long message (sorry). I’ve been crocheting for a little over a year now(!) and I’ve been keeping any scraps that couldn’t be tucked away into my finished amigurumi, in a Ziploc bag in my hook case. The bag was (yay, past tense!) pretty densely filled, and the case was getting hard to shut. So this week’s theme seemed the perfect time to join in AND use up the scraps.
Going into it, I knew I wanted to make a cat. So I started by sorting out what scraps might be usable and what were definitely destined to be stuffing. Once sorted, and noting all the neutrals (surprising since I mostly craft in pastels) I opted to follow a pattern:
Since I wanted my cat to have calico-esque splotches instead of stripes, and didn’t want to design anything while fighting colour changes. Which was definitely the right call, although I did freehand a tail rather than deal with sewing one on. Which is why it looks a bit off.
The rest of the colours (excluding some long, potentially usable green and brown strings from gifted yarns I don’t have tags for, and some tan/cream embroidery thread) I used as stuffing for him.
Scrappy, or Scraps, (haven’t fully settled on his name yet) ended up using more yarn than I initially planned. So the last few splotches I had to dig out my stashed yarns for. Plus, I started my next white skein since that ball barely completed the face, but I expected that part going into the project.
He’s of course stuffed exclusively in the aforementioned scraps. I attempted to embroider face details (with scraps) before quickly deciding the mouth was the most he was getting. As I’ve still not got a knack for embroidery, unfortunately. But I compromised by giving him a little (scrap) bowtie.
He’s a little more juvenile (for lack of a better word) than most of my other projects, but he’s got character so he’s a welcome addition anyways.
A simple potato-cat was also an excellent break since my previous project was ChundraChun’s (youtuber) ball python. Which when worked in size 4 acrylic yarn works up to be just slightly under 6ft
. I almost posted it here during colour week, but didn’t quite finish in time (ran out of the apparently discontinued, or severely backordered, bright yellow, and set it aside for a week until I could find a close-enough substitute).
