De-Stash December (Stashbust September continues!)

I got a bunch of plush yarn in both xmas colours and a lot of pink from temu, i thought it was thicker than it is, i was planning on making axolotl slippers but ill have to rethink than and make some kind of plushie i think. I feel like ive already failed no buy November in a big way by going to hoobycraft and indulging in their sale today

I use yarn scraps in most of my projects as a stitch marker and for any embroidery. I keep a little paper cup next to me and when it fills up i fish out anything usable and stick the rest in the stuffing bag. For example, i fished out some glow in the dark scraps for my minime Halloween edition

(This is gonna be a looonngggg post:skull:)

It really does! September-January is basically all the same month in my brain haha:sob:

My hands are somehow still messed up. Which is very unusual for me because of my condition:skull: I sprain and dislocate stuff every day of my life, but man, these wrists just won’t heal!
So, i’ve been trying to take it easy on them.

My roving packages finally arrived after a million shipping issues lol! I also went to my lys for my birthday and bought a bunch from them because they have a new “fiber bar”, where everything is $2-3 an ounce depending on how much you buy! Plus you can mix and match!

Summary

I have no clue what order ribblr decided to put these pictures in so bare with me lol:skull:
But I got:
15.2oz of silk,
2oz of bamboo,
About 1.8oz of sari silk (I spun part of this and all the bamboo as soon as I got home lol),
.6oz of the softest fiber I’ve ever felt! It’s some type of bunny (probably angora),
And really pretty dyed silk(?) that’s what it feels like at least

This is my current spinning project with some of the roving from the lys!

Summary

This is the package of roving I received yesterday from https://www.etsy.com/shop/mohairandmore?ref=yr_purchases
8oz of bamboo, 4oz of banana, and 8oz of corriedale-mixed

Summary

And then, the package I got today from https://www.etsy.com/shop/oneoftheflock?ref=yr_purchases

Summary

Both shop owners were very sweet, I totally recommend ordering from them :]

I currently don’t really have any useable scraps lol.
If I have time this week, I’m gonna start working on a duck for my aunt because she wants to give it to her friend for her baby shower!
Maybe I’ll use my super tiny scraps for some stuffing?
Other than that, I’m slowly continuing the progress on the hats for my mom and grandma, the blanket, and my dress which is now to the point I’m increasing for the skirt part!
I also got to try it on, and it fits absolutely perfectly!! I was so happy because I didn’t try it on any other time:sob:

I completely forgot to show what I made for this  But here it is! Ive had this pink fluffy yarn in my stash for a while and I love it sooo much (even tho it’s a pain to work with sometimes) So I decided to make a hedgehog with it!!

I really like it and it sooooo soft!!

Personally for my scraps if they’re long enough to knot I attach to my scrap yarn cake with other yarn scraps to make a long one to do who knows what since it’s all random yarns that are the same weight :joy: If they’re too short which they usually are they’re really tio small to do anything with and I try to save for stuffing

I’m still in the middle of testing several patterns including the cardigan but I’m almost finished!! So until then I probably won’t be able to follow the themes of the week but the small tests I’m doing between them will be my way of destashing my yarn :yarn: but I really want to follow these themes too lol I’m torn  Guess I can always go through them and do them at a later date

As for the gifted pattern that’s honestly so kind and generous, seriously between you and Paya I don’t know who’s sweeter  There’s no need to but if you want you can always just gift me the cheapest pattern I have, either way thank you once again for previous patterns as well!

Thank you so much for more photos of Paya  Also for the Colorama halo! I never thought to use for amigurumi for some reason but they look so cute! I can only imagine how soft they are

Thank you again lol Definitely love having something to mindlessly work on, I did manage to finish the Spiderweb top from the progress photo! Here’s the final product

Honestly I’m surprised by how much I got done too lol borrow as much as you want :joy:

Hi, hope you don’t mind me sharing here. Or the long message (sorry). I’ve been crocheting for a little over a year now(!) and I’ve been keeping any scraps that couldn’t be tucked away into my finished amigurumi, in a Ziploc bag in my hook case. The bag was (yay, past tense!) pretty densely filled, and the case was getting hard to shut. So this week’s theme seemed the perfect time to join in AND use up the scraps.

Going into it, I knew I wanted to make a cat. So I started by sorting out what scraps might be usable and what were definitely destined to be stuffing. Once sorted, and noting all the neutrals (surprising since I mostly craft in pastels) I opted to follow a pattern:

Since I wanted my cat to have calico-esque splotches instead of stripes, and didn’t want to design anything while fighting colour changes. Which was definitely the right call, although I did freehand a tail rather than deal with sewing one on. Which is why it looks a bit off.

The rest of the colours (excluding some long, potentially usable green and brown strings from gifted yarns I don’t have tags for, and some tan/cream embroidery thread) I used as stuffing for him.

Scrappy, or Scraps, (haven’t fully settled on his name yet) ended up using more yarn than I initially planned. So the last few splotches I had to dig out my stashed yarns for. Plus, I started my next white skein since that ball barely completed the face, but I expected that part going into the project.

He’s of course stuffed exclusively in the aforementioned scraps. I attempted to embroider face details (with scraps) before quickly deciding the mouth was the most he was getting. As I’ve still not got a knack for embroidery, unfortunately. But I compromised by giving him a little (scrap) bowtie.

He’s a little more juvenile (for lack of a better word) than most of my other projects, but he’s got character so he’s a welcome addition anyways.

A simple potato-cat was also an excellent break since my previous project was ChundraChun’s (youtuber) ball python. Which when worked in size 4 acrylic yarn works up to be just slightly under 6ft . I almost posted it here during colour week, but didn’t quite finish in time (ran out of the apparently discontinued, or severely backordered, bright yellow, and set it aside for a week until I could find a close-enough substitute).

(Working on responding to you lovely people, but wanted to drop the prompt before I jump into that)

This week I’m encouraging us to learn a new stitch or stitch pattern! It can be any stitch variation and used as much or as little as you like in your make :sparkles:

I don’t mind at all - anyone is welcome to join in and at any time! Congratulations on your crochet journey, and wonderful job using up your scrap bag!! I really like the idea of having the bag easily accessible in your hook case, too!

Isn’t it so interesting what you discover when going through your scraps? I have a giant box and bag that have been with me since the start of my journey, and while I dip into them often for stuffing, there are still heaps of them. The fun part of that is the way the scraps are layered I can tell what phase of my crafting I was on or specific projects I was working on - it’s like stratigraphy in a way :joy:

I honestly wouldn’t have even known you had issues with the tail because it looks right to me. I LOVE the calico vibe you achieved - that’s awesome, and it’s cool you were able to use up scraps in several ways making your cat! Either name would be perfect given his origin story.
(Side note: fighting colour changes had me actually LOL)

I can definitely see why you needed a bit of a break after that massive project! Just a heads up, you can share any progress made on a project, even if unfinished. Honestly, like 3 of my projects from these past few months are still wips, so feel free to share in the future if ever you want to join in! In fact, you’re welcome to share with us still if you want!

Thank you so much for participating and for this detailed update - I enjoyed reading it!

here’s what I did!! (lol yes, I forgot to show the picture again) I made a leggy frog with some of my tiny scraps and then made her a scarf with more scrap yarn (she is also filled with scrap yarn)

bonus question: I don’t have a lot of scraps normally. My really tiny ones I just use for stuffing and the bigger scraps I normally end up using for details and things like that.

It’s okay, haha! I just realized myself I haven’t been sharing my progress/projects

Your scrap frog is so stinking cute! The scarf was a great addition and perfect for the season!

It’s awesome you have managed to use up a lot of your scraps. I also like to use mine for stuffing and details, but one day I would love to organize them a little and make a larger project.

You already know what I’m going to say, which is - what a brilliant idea! A scrap cake - I LOVE THAT. I would be delighted to see something made from one. Honestly I might start doing that because it sounds kind of fun and actually a great way to organize the scraps size-wise. ^.^

You can absolutely revisit the themes at a later date! And @ everyone: I still welcome updates on your wips whenever you want in this thread, if I didn’t make it known already  I just love seeing and hearing about what everyone is working on! Checking this topic is like my decompress activity after work now, haha. Good luck with all those tests - your Rudolph/deer snuggler was absolutely adorable, btw!

I’m definitely sweeter (LOL) because he’s a little rapscallion, but Paya looks sweeter for sure. I should have the gift sent your way shortly! ^.^
I can say I didn’t intend to use the colorama halo for amigurumi, but life is weird sometimes  Glad the photos were helpful!

The top came out fabulously - congrats on another finished piece!

It looks INCREDIBLY soft - that was such a clever way to use the fuzzy yarn, especially because it’s not a significant amount of crocheting to do so you’re not having to endure the struggle for too long :joy: Came out awesome, too - well done!

That’s okay! What a cute gift for a baby shower  Scraps for stuffing is always a good call in my book.

What an exciting update on the dress - oh my gosh!! I love being able to try things on as you’re working; tailoring a garment perfectly to your body is one of the best aspects of making your own clothing. How fantastically fortunate it fits so well, though; congrats!

Lucky for me because I love long posts! Haha. I feel that statement in my soul. I thought this year was gonna be a lax year for me, but boy was I misguided, haha.

I hope your wrists have been giving you less grief since posting. Glad you’re trying to take it easy on them, though; it’s so hard when there are so many things you want to do. <3

That fiber bar sounds AWESOME. I’d be like a kid in a candy shop; I imagine you were too  I am so sorry I missed your birthday! Wishing you the best and brightest year ahead and sending you a little belated pattern gift in celebration!

You got some truly beautiful fibers there; I’m happy they finally made it to you! I love seeing your updates in the chat and your spinning project when you posted this was GORG!

Tysm for sharing the shops you ordered from - it’s much appreciated! I really think I want to try my hand at spinning in the new year and you’ve definitely inspired me with your posts. Look forward to seeing more of your creations ^.^

I don’t suppose you have enough that you could double up the pink for the slippers? A plushie is a good choice, too, however!

It’s SO FREAKIN HARD to resist all the amazing sales going on right now. I can’t even look at yarn sites at the moment - temptation is too strong. I think I’m only helped by the fact that I’ve been so stupidly busy lately I haven’t really had the time to look online or stop into a craft store and my bank account is thanking me because we both know my willpower is not strong enough in the face of these incredible deals! I hope you got some fabulous goodies ^.^

I’m so glad I made this prompt because y’all are giving me so many good ideas wrt scraps. Like it’s so simple to just have your cup and go through the scraps after each project, but I never thought of that :joy: - I just throw 'em on the heap and then stare at it later like :face_with_spiral_eyes:

THAT PROJECT IS SO COOL - both the prompt and the final result! Your ingenuity is admirable, and it’s neat how scraps are integrated into various facets of your project and your process! Ty for sharing!

I know what you mean about the little heap of scraps  i put them in a cup now because they got unmanageable in a heap and i was concerned the cat might eat them, plus they kept dropping on the floor and generally looking aright mess! I fished out some black yarn scraps this morning for my polar bear bauble nose. Its purely a form of extreme laziness because otherwise id have to heft myself upstairs to the cupboard to find the black yarn and crochet is supposed to be relaxing:see_no_evil:.

My wrists are doing a little better! (Although I pushed them really hard yesterday:sob:)
It’s been really difficult to take breaks lol.

I spent well over an hour at that fiber bar haha! I was soooo indecisive:sob:
At first I only ended up getting 2 things (neither were fiber), because I didn’t know the prices at the bar and they hadn’t put up the signs yet.
But then my mom was like “That’s really all your getting?:face_with_raised_eyebrow: Go crazy girlie it’s your birthday”
Soooo, I did:skull: The owner saw me looking at the fibers so she told me the prices.
It was a lot of fun, and despite how much stuff I got, it only ended up being around $60 :]
Thank you so much for the gift!! That’s so sweet of you<3:sob: I’ve been looking forward to trying out that pattern!

Best of luck with your spinning journey!! Glad I could inspire someone with my new obsession haha!

You should definitely try when you have the chance! I love putting it on my yarn winder after combining the yarn together and watching it become a bigger cake!

Lol  :cat: thank you once again for another gift :wrapped_gift:! Now that I’m going through my yarn I’m discovering some good yarn I forgot I had! I need to go through some more and decide on some colors for the gifted pattern  and thank you! Surprisingly the Spiderweb top was very easy to make and I plan on trying other patterns for different variations with the same yarn!

Valentines Day Love GIF by BREAD TREE

(My dedication and time management lol)

I was looking through my yarn to destash and decided to get rid of a huge chunk of them (Premier Just Yarn Plush and Eyelash yarn) while the texture and colors are wonderful finding the stitches are incredibly hard so I opted to make another huge granny square blanket using the granny spike stitch so I don’t have to worry about the stitches! I could make more color changes but I decided to just have it change colors after the skein finishes lol. The best part even if it finishes at any part of the row it’s not noticeable when the color changes! Here’s a WIP photo right now  Since I’m using all those yarns I hope the way I decided to have the colors change works out well!

Wow! That’s an ingenious use of spike stitches! And probably the only sane way to use up a bunch of eyelash yarn. I’ve heard it’s incredibly difficult to work with. I’ve been avoiding it entirely, but your blanket looks so fluffy that I’m tempted to try it, at least as an accent.
I’m really excited to see how your finished blanket turns out. It looks great so far!

Thank you! And yes I find it hard to work with! I even have to be careful not to remove my hook from the loop while I work or I’ll have trouble finding it again! I think using it in open spaces (Like maybe a moss stitch or going between posts of double spaces, etc) where you don’t have to go through the actual stitches but spaces (like a granny spike stitch) works really well for it!
