I have ADHD and cannot focus to save my liffeeee.
I am planning to get medicated soon because high school and debate will be a beast if all I can do is daydream :D!!
I cannot focus to save my life no matter what is going on except for math? My brain likes math.
I have tried:
getting rid of stimulants
adding stimulants
silence
music
standing
sitting
laying down
munching food or gum
chugging water
NO1 HYPEMAN 1999 hypeman speeches (Thanks Mango)
Focus websites
Rewards
movement
breaks
probably more I forgot
Its been a pain with homework yet such an inability to focus on what I need to do (I say as I type this while not being able to focus on homework). Please give me your tips Unhinged or not if they work I WILL TRY THEM
Literally for reading I read like a paragraph or for a subject I just split it into parts and give myself a reward after I finish each part (usually sugar/candy ) but I don’t have many things I need good ideas too though
I usually have a blank paper by me, because I like to doodle, and so when I am reading the problem or figuring out how to do it, I will doodle mindlessly on the other paper, and it really helps me focus. I hope that helps!
have you tried white noise or turning on a fan (on a low setting)? less distracting than music, but better than silence (at least for me)
idk hope this helps :]
As silly adhd fella here’s what I found works for me: don’t do anything until it’s due because that the only time I have motivation to do it, but it gets done
Really it’s the pressure to finish that pulls me through.
really rhythmic and drum/bass heavy stuff.
Artists that work best for me
Toby fox - amalgam 10 hour loop
Femtynl - Katamari, and Push Your T3mper
Mailpup - no songs in specific but I can send a playlist :3
Work anywhere but home. Like I physically cannot work at home unless it’s for silly stuff.
Libraries my beloved <3
I find that breakcore and funk have the best results for me :3
if i have to get work done, i like to go out to a public place like the library where there will be other people (if and only my social battery is charged enough for that) and i work there. it helps because i am uh kinda self-conscious about everything so it tricks my brain into working harder because i don’t wanna look like a slacker it’s a trick i’ve seen other people use, and it works great for me!
I have heard that video game music can help people focas because it is designed to keep people engaged in a game, (skyrim has great music) idk tho I haven’t tried it
currently the one thing working is bird noises, eating food, and sitting in a chair on two legs at a high top counter (this is dangerous). I give this set up about 10 minutes before i cant focus again
Not sure if this will help or not but I take my phone and record a time lapse of me studying and it’s oddly motivating to get to watch it later and if I’m doing that I can’t use my phone which is my biggest distraction not sure if this will work for you though
I don’t have adhd but I am autistic and sometimes really bad at focusing on homework so here is some random stuff
I sometimes turn on a live cam of animals at the monterey bay aquarium because it doesnt distract me too much but still gives me something in the background
Taking spontaneous breaks to shout “I HATE THIS” can be kinda helpful
Also this might not work with reading it but just trying to do it as fast as humanly possible just so it is done in as few minutes, even if it isn’t super good
As a master procrastinator, I tend to wait until the last moment to complete assignments: doing it responsibly over a long period of time doesn’t work for me and even bribery, unfortunately, sometimes doesn’t work and it’s SO ANNOYING. So far listening to a game soundtrack I like loop over and over helps (but I do it a lot so maybe not) I think mostly the pressure during crunch time the night before the assignment is due is the biggest motivator…especially with the threat of an all-nighter looming over me
As someone who was diagnosed in my 40s but suffered from it since grade school.
I would break up into pieces whatever I hated to do. So, 5 minutes in a boring stitch in a blanket followed by 15 minutes of the project I really want to work on .
Put the phone in the OTHER ROOM! Or use a focus app with rewards like Forest.
Do the thing that I don’t want to do, do it first!
Even though I’m quite HOH, listening to the book while reading it really helps. ( I add an amplifier to the headphones). Reading g it out loud to self or another person.
Read it aloud in a sing sing voice. Read it aloud to the tune of Old McDonald Had A Farm.
Doodle, draw, or paint the major concepts of what I’m reading. When I took Anatomy and Physiology in college, I would color the parts I had to memorize.
Statistics and Algebra: blue pen for the multiplication, green for add, brown for divide, orange for subtraction
Put on some lo fi music in the background- this was a game changer for me.
Words of affirmation from others on my finished task really motivated me.
Just read it, don’t try to take notes, don’t try to understand it just read it. Or break is down further- just read half of it. If after that you don’t want to continue, that’s ok walk away.
Read it in between some form of physical activity (this really helps me), read for 5 minutes then go sweep the floor/do 15 minutes of power waking/ 10 jumping jacks- whatever- then go back and read for another 5 minutes. Repeat.
Hope this helps!
Oh -and take medication that works! Tell the doctor when it doesn’t work and insist on a trial of something else.
