Mature Murder Books?

hey there! im 14 and i would like to start reading some murder/ crime books, i am able to handle blood and graphic gore (at least description wise) but my parents will not let me read anything with drug use or sexual content… (for good reason) but i cant find anything that is as mature as i want it to be on the murder side and doesn’t contain crazy sexual content or other stuff…

any suggestions?

I’m not sure if there’s anything in it. You may want to look it up to be sure. But my sisters like the lunar chronicles! it’s not really a murder but it’s a older fantasy. Idk sorry.

I really like the A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series! and there’s another book by the same author called The Reappearance of Rachel Price, which is also super good.
I also like the One Of Us Is Lying series :)

Have you read the original Sherlock Holmes books by Arthur Conan Doyle?

I remember reading the Scythe series by Neal Shusterman when I was that age. Not necessarily true crime but there are some fantasy murder mystery components, plus it’s more mature without sexual content or drugs

My favourite genre of books is murder/mystery/crime and I could give you a whole list of authors suited to adults, but probably contain some of the subjects your parents don’t yet want to expose you to. The good news is, some of these authors, have also started to write murder/mystery/crime novels suited to young adults. The 2 authors that immediately come to mind are James Patterson and Kathy Reich. They both have young adult murder/mystery/crime novels that I believe would be appropriate for you (although I haven’t read them myself).

Perhaps if you went to your local library and asked the librarian what was available and popular with young adults, they could give you some recommendations. That way you could try a few different authors without having to buy something that you don’t enjoy. :two_hearts:

Okay, I will say, One of Us is Lying or in general Karen’s (the author) books, are mysteries, but at the same time have a lot of romance themes in them. The series is good if you like that, and like twists & different points of view are nice, but if you aren’t a big romance fan, you may not like it. (I have almost all of her books, and read 3 out of the 8 books she’s written. The One of Us is Lying is a trilogy, and I currently don’t know if her book “The Cousins” is a MM bc I’m currently in the middle of it. BUT “One can keep a secret” is an excellent book that is MM. It has a lot of “oh I have a crush” but it honestly isn’t as bad of romance as One of Us is Lying.) Gosh that was a lot of typing.

And the romance goes as far as touching, kissing, and mentions (like a line) of what happened.

i do not mind romance as long as its not graphic (IYKYK) but they do sound good so ill check the ones you rec. out to!

You should try reading the wings of fire series(one of my favorite books) and for the crime it’s kind of a children’s book but if you like spy stuff you should try the city spies. (Sry if these aren’t the type of book you want and if these are to kiddish) Hope these are good books!

Edit: now that I think of it in wings of fire it has a little bit or sexual thing I think but not much.

Yes, I love Patricia Cornwell also. I’m just not sure they’re suited to a young teen reader.

Right, I wasn’t thinking about it. However, I was reduced to recommending Agatha Christie
